Is Pune water hard where you live?
It depends on the source, not the city. Core Pune is piped from the Khadakwasla, Panshet and Varasgaon dams, and in areas like Kothrud, Deccan and Sinhagad Road that supply usually reads 150 to 300 ppm TDS. Chlorine, not hardness, is the main irritant there.
The newer townships tell a different story. Many societies in Wakad, Hinjewadi, Wagholi and Undri depend on borewells and tankers, which read 400 ppm and well beyond. A flat in Kothrud and a friend's flat in a Wakad high-rise can have completely different water. Our article on Pune hard water, hair and skin has the full picture.
Which hard water filter in Pune suits your area?
| Area | Usual source | Typical TDS band | Filter to pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kothrud, Deccan, Shivajinagar, Camp, Sinhagad Road, Warje | PMC dam supply | 150 to 300 ppm | Municipal Water |
| Pimpri, Chinchwad (core) | PCMC Pavana supply | 150 to 300 ppm | Municipal Water |
| Aundh, older Baner, Kalyani Nagar, Koregaon Park, Katraj | PMC supply, some top-up | 200 to 400 ppm | Municipal Water |
| Viman Nagar, Magarpatta | Mixed PMC or township and borewell | 300 to 600 ppm | Borewell/Tanker Water if bore top-up is regular |
| Wakad, Hinjewadi, Balewadi | Borewell and tanker in most societies | 400 to 700 ppm and above | Borewell/Tanker Water |
| Undri, Pisoli, NIBM Road, Kondhwa | Borewell, tanker or mixed | 400 to 800 ppm | Borewell/Tanker Water |
| Hadapsar, Mundhwa, Kharadi, Wagholi | Borewell and tanker | 500 to 900 ppm, pockets to 2,000 | Borewell/Tanker Water |
| Pimpri-Chinchwad fringe, Alandi | Borewell and tanker | 500 to 900 ppm | Borewell/Tanker Water |
The Municipal version is built to handle inlet water up to about 800 ppm TDS, and the Borewell/Tanker version up to about 1,800 ppm. Those numbers are for choosing the right size, not a reduction claim. Two buildings on one road can differ, so measure with a home hardness test before you order.
What if your Pune reading is above 1,800 ppm?
Then neither bathroom filter is built for your water, and we would rather say so. Some pockets of Hadapsar, Mundhwa, Kharadi and Wagholi reach 2,000 ppm. If your meter reads above 1,800 ppm at the shower, the answer is building-level treatment first, with a bathing filter only as an extra step after it.
Most readings in those belts sit between 500 and 900 ppm, well inside the Borewell/Tanker rating. Test in April as well as in the monsoon, because tanker sourcing and dam levels move the number through the year.
Why does hair change after moving to Hinjewadi or Wakad?
Because the move often means switching from dam water to groundwater. Calcium and magnesium leave a film on hair and scalp, so hair feels dry and coated, snaps more easily, and shampoo barely lathers. Everyday shedding then looks far worse than it is.
Water is rarely the only cause. Stress, sleep, diet and genetics all play a part, and a new job and city bring plenty of each. The Hinjewadi water problem article covers that belt in detail.
An independent clinical study (50 participants, TDS above 500 ppm, 4 weeks) found 78% hair fall reduction, 11% scalp hydration increase and 87% would recommend Care Dale.
Is a water softener for shower in Pune the same as a salt softener?
Within the ultrafiltration membrane housing, CareTec media neutralise dissolved calcium and magnesium, preventing limescale buildup and leaving skin and hair free from hard water damage. This does not rely on chemical exchange, which needs very frequent maintenance (every 2 weeks).
| Option | Upfront | Running cost | Install |
|---|---|---|---|
| Care Dale Municipal Water (4.97/5, 515 reviews) | ₹1,499 |
₹699 cartridge, 3 to 4 months | Two minutes, no plumber |
| Care Dale Borewell/Tanker Water (4.95/5, 295 reviews) | ₹1,899 |
₹899 cartridge, 3 to 4 months | Two minutes, no plumber |
| Whole-house salt softener | ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 | ₹6,000+ a year in salt | Plumber, drain point |
It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals. Output sits at pH 5.5 to 6.5 with no salt, chemicals or waste water, and a cartridge covers about 25,000 litres.

Pune water softener questions
Can one filter cover the whole flat?
Can one filter cover the whole flat?
No. It treats the single outlet it is fitted to. Most homes put it where hair gets washed, usually the main shower or bathroom tap, and add a second unit for another bathroom if needed.
Is washing hair with RO water a good fix?
Is washing hair with RO water a good fix?
It works, because low-mineral water is gentler on hair, but carrying buckets of RO water for every wash is hard to keep up. Treating the bathing water at the shower or tap gives a similar result without the daily effort.
Can a tap filter for hard water in Pune be used for bucket baths?
Can a tap filter for hard water in Pune be used for bucket baths?
Yes. Fitted to the bathroom tap spout in place of the aerator, it filters the water you fill the bucket with and the water you wash your face in. The same unit moves to the shower arm later.
Does it lower the TDS of tanker water?
Does it lower the TDS of tanker water?
No. A bathing filter conditions hardness and removes chlorine and sediment, but dissolved solids stay at roughly the same reading. Lowering TDS needs reverse osmosis, which suits drinking water rather than a whole shower.
How often will I change cartridges on borewell water?
How often will I change cartridges on borewell water?
Plan on every 3 to 4 months, or sooner if the water carries a lot of sediment. The cartridge turns from white to brown as it fills, which tells you when it is done.
Is the filter safe for a rented flat?
Is the filter safe for a rented flat?
Yes. Nothing is cut or plumbed in. It unscrews in the same two minutes it took to fit and leaves the tap or shower arm exactly as it was.
