Hinjewadi Water Problem: Wakad and Baner Explained

Last updated: 23 July 2026.

Hinjewadi's water problem is not that Pune ran out of water. It is that nobody owns the corridor's supply. The IT park sits on MIDC land, the housing around it falls under PMRDA and village gram panchayats, while Wakad answers to PCMC and Baner to PMC.

So the pipes arrived years after the towers did. Many societies here still fill their tanks from borewells and bought tankers rather than a steady municipal line. That water is groundwater, and groundwater is what meets your hair and skin at every wash.

This guide sets out who actually supplies Hinjewadi, Wakad and Baner, why bought water behaves so differently from piped, and what a dermatologist-certified, clinically tested filter can and cannot do.

Why does Hinjewadi have a water problem when it is Pune's biggest employer?

Because responsibility is split and no single agency owns the corridor. MIDC built the IT park, PMRDA and the gram panchayats developed the housing around it, and both municipal networks stop at their own boundaries. Nobody owns the gap in between.

The scale explains the pressure. Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park covers 2,800 acres, with more than 250 companies, four to five lakh people working there and over one lakh living on site. Water has been a running complaint for years.

A permanent fix exists mostly on paper. Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran drew up the ₹565 crore water supply scheme for Hinjewadi, with ₹100 crore released, stalled because the water quota has not been sanctioned. PMRDA has since asked for 1.2 TMC from Mulshi reservoir.

Who actually supplies water to Hinjewadi, Wakad and Baner?

Three different bodies, plus a belt that largely supplies itself. Wakad sits inside PCMC and drinks the Pawana river; Baner and Balewadi are PMC. Hinjewadi and the villages beside it, Maan, Marunji and Mhalunge, sit outside both corporations, which is why bores and tankers do so much work here.

Where you live Who is responsible What the tap usually runs on Hardness tendency
Hinjewadi Phase 1 to 3, inside the IT park MIDC MIDC lines, topped up by tankers Varies with the top-up
Hinjewadi housing, Maan, Marunji, Mhalunge PMRDA and gram panchayats Society borewells and bought tankers Hard, shifts delivery to delivery
Wakad, Punawale, Ravet PCMC Pawana river, alternate days Moderate piped, harder on off days
Baner, Balewadi PMC Piped supply short of demand Moderate, rises when tankers arrive
PG rooms and rented flats Your landlord or society Whatever was booked that week Unknown until you test

One tanker delivery can change your water overnight, which is why two towers on a road often read differently. Through the dry months tanker season lifts hardness across Indian cities, and this corridor feels it early.

Why is the bore and tanker water under this corridor hard?

Because the corridor sits on Deccan trap basalt, and water moving through basalt picks up calcium. The Central Ground Water Board classifies Pune district groundwater as calcium bicarbonate and calcium chloride type, held in weathered, fractured and jointed basalt, with wells drilled as deep as 201 metres.

Calcium bicarbonate is the scale signature: the chemistry that furs up a kettle element and leaves the mineral film that dulls hair and tightens skin. CGWB rates the district's groundwater as suitable for drinking, so this is a washing problem, not a safety one.

Levels are falling too, the same report recording a declining pre-monsoon trend across Mulshi and Maval talukas, where the corridor and its catchment sit. We have answered whether Pune's water is hard overall separately.

Does being on PCMC or PMC piped supply mean your water is fine?

Not automatically, because the piped supply here is not daily. PCMC has run alternate-day supply since 25 November 2019 and expects another year before daily water returns, pending the Bhama Askhed pipeline. Whatever fills your tank on an off day is usually groundwater.

Baner and Balewadi have the same gap in a different shape. The Balewadi Welfare Forum has told PMC the area needs about 8 MLD while the corporation supplies around 6 MLD, with close to 30% lost to leakage, so tankers queue outside societies.

Piped water here is not necessarily hard, though. One Wakad resident measured TDS between 200 and 250 ppm on society supply, inside the BIS desirable limit. The catch is you rarely get the same water two days running, and TDS and hardness are not the same number anyway.

How do you find out what your building actually runs on?

Ask your secretary which source filled the sump this week, then measure it yourself. Here the answer can differ between a Tuesday and a Thursday, so one December reading tells you little about May. Two minutes with a soap test and a meter beats guessing from the locality name.

Indian standards give you the yardstick. IS 10500:2012 sets acceptable total hardness at 200 mg/L, permissible up to 600 mg/L where no alternative source exists, and desirable TDS at 500 mg/L.

Test on a piped day and again on a tanker day. Our guide to testing hard water at home covers the soap shake, strips and lab route with costs, and borewell readings in Indian apartments shows how far those numbers travel.

What actually helps if you rent in the corridor?

Reduce the hardness and chlorine reaching your hair and skin at every wash, because you cannot choose which water turns up. Fixing the corridor's supply is a state project measured in years. Fixing what lands on your scalp is a weekend job you control.

  • Stored RO water helps, but nobody keeps up bucket washes for long.
  • Vinegar or yogurt rinses decalcify hair briefly and do nothing for skin or the next wash.
  • A **shower or tap filter** treats water at the point of use, needs no plumbing, and comes off the wall when you move, which is why it works so well in rented flats and PG rooms.

What can a filter do, and what can it not?

A Care Dale filter reduces the hardness, chlorine and physical contaminants that drive dryness and breakage, so shampoo lathers and skincare absorbs. It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals.

Worth saying plainly: no shower filter, Care Dale included, addresses iron, heavy metals, chloramine, TDS or bacteria. Those need treatment upstream. And if your shedding climbed after you moved here for work, hair fall often rises after a move for reasons beyond the tap.

How long before you notice a difference?

Give it about four weeks. Most people report softer hair and less skin tightness within two to three weeks, once the mineral film stops rebuilding. Shedding and scalp comfort take longer, usually a couple of months.

An independent clinical study of 50 participants on water above 500 ppm TDS, over four weeks, recorded a 78% reduction in hair fall, an 11% rise in scalp hydration, and 87% who would recommend it. Results vary, no filter cures hair fall, and diet, stress, sleep and genetics still matter.

Curated Picks

Pick by what your sump receives, not the locality name, and re-test every few months as the piped and tanker mix shifts. If torn, matching the filter to your water type settles it.

Both use the same CareTec 3-layer system: pre-filtration for sediment, CareTec ultra filtration for hardness, and a final layer for chlorine and impurities. It removes 96% of chlorine and blocks 92% of calcium, with no salt, chemicals or waste water. Fitting takes two minutes, and a cartridge lasts three to four months or about 25,000 litres.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the water problem in Hinjewadi? Governance more than geography. Hinjewadi falls in Mulshi tehsil, outside both corporations, so the IT park, the villages and the housing answer to different authorities. A merger into PCMC has been debated for years, and meanwhile tankers cover the shortfall.

How is the water supply in Hinjewadi? Patchy and source-dependent. Plots inside the park draw on MIDC lines, while societies in Maan, Marunji and Mhalunge lean on borewells and tankers. PMRDA has sought 1.2 TMC from Mulshi dam to put the belt on a permanent piped scheme.

What is the TDS of water in Hinjewadi? There is no single figure, because the source changes by building and by week, and bore or tanker readings run above piped ones. A shower or tap filter reduces hardness, chlorine, odours and micro-particles. It does not lower TDS or remove iron, heavy metals or bacteria, because it is filtration, not a purifier.

What is the water problem in Wakad? Wakad has pipes but not daily water. PCMC supplies on alternate days, so tanks get topped up from society bores or tankers in between. Residents have separately raised taste and quality complaints about the piped supply itself.

Is there a water shortage in Wakad? Most summers, yes. Pawana dam fell to 16% storage after the delayed 2026 monsoon, the water resources department imposed a 15% cut from 19 June, and PCMC trimmed supply hours. Storage has since recovered, but the cut stayed.

How is the water supply in Wakad? Alternate-day PCMC supply drawn from the Pawana river and treated at Nigdi. The corporation serves roughly 38 lakh people on about 650 MLD against demand near 655 MLD, so pressure and timing vary by society.
