Where does Hyderabad's tap water come from?
From six sources on HMWSSB's own register: Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar on the Musi, Singur and Manjeera on the Manjeera river, Akkampally on the Krishna, and Yellampally on the Godavari. The Krishna draws 270 MGD and the Godavari 162 MGD, against 45 MGD from the Manjeera.
All three rivers start soft to moderate. Published sampling puts Manjeera water at 60 to 165 mg/L total hardness at source, and a twelve-month study of Nagarjuna Sagar recorded Krishna water at 127 to 197 mg/L. Both sit under the BIS acceptable limit of 200 mg/L.
Groundwater is a different story. A study co-authored with the Central Ground Water Board found Hyderabad city groundwater at 250 to 801 mg/L total hardness, averaging 442. Our guide to Hyderabad tap water sources maps each line to its colonies.
Which hard water filter in Hyderabad suits your area?
| Areas typically served | Usual source | Hardness tendency | Filter to pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ramachandrapuram, Lingampally, Chandanagar, Miyapur, KPHB, Kukatpally, Ameerpet | Manjeera Phase-2 | Soft to moderate at source | Municipal Water |
| Alwal, Yapral, Jeedimetla, Kompally, Bachupally, Nizampet | Godavari Phase-1, Yellampally | Moderate, reservoir-type | Municipal Water |
| Jubilee Hills, Mehdipatnam, Saroornagar, Nagole, Uppal | Krishna Phase-3, Akkampally | Moderate at source | Municipal Water |
| Gachibowli, Kondapur, Madhapur, HITEC City, Nanakramguda, Manikonda | Krishna line, with borewell and tanker in many gated communities | Hard, often 300+ ppm | Borewell/Tanker Water |
| Outer ORR belts, plots beyond piped reach | Borewell and tanker | Hard to very hard, wide seasonal swings | Borewell/Tanker Water |
Kukatpally and Miyapur sit on both the Manjeera and Godavari networks, so your sump can fill from either. In the IT corridor the board line exists, but towers that top up from bores and tankers are bathing in groundwater for part of the year. The Municipal version is built to handle inlet water up to about 800 ppm TDS; the Borewell/Tanker version up to about 1,800 ppm. Those are sizing figures, not a reduction claim.
Why do Gachibowli flats feel the water more than the old city?
Because the old city mostly bathes in river water and much of the western IT belt bathes in groundwater. River supply to the core and old city usually reads about 150 to 250 ppm, while borewell-fed areas run above 300 ppm and often far higher.
Local sampling backs this up. Borewells around Saroornagar and LB Nagar returned 303 to 396 mg/L total hardness. Hardness also climbs through tanker season, as the water table drops and more buildings lean on bores.
Many forum threads blame iron for hair trouble here. In most homes the measurable driver is calcium and magnesium, not iron, so reducing hardness is the change that helps. Our article on Hyderabad hard water, hair and skin covers the symptoms in detail.
How does a water softener for bathroom in Hyderabad work without salt?
Within the ultrafiltration membrane housing, CareTec media neutralise dissolved calcium and magnesium, preventing limescale buildup and leaving skin and hair free from hard water damage. This does not rely on chemical exchange, which needs very frequent maintenance (every 2 weeks).
- Municipal cartridge: sediment, CareTec mesh, chlorine removal.
- Borewell/Tanker cartridge: sediment, an extra hardness layer, CareTec mesh, chlorine removal.
- Output at pH 5.5 to 6.5, with no salt, chemicals or waste water.
It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals. It is made for bathing, so Manjeera or Krishna water for drinking still goes through your kitchen purifier.

A whole-house salt softener costs ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 upfront plus ₹6,000 or more a year in salt, and needs a plumber. A bathroom RO runs ₹50,000 and up. The filter needs neither, which suits a rented flat in Kondapur as well as an owned one in Kukatpally.

Hyderabad water softener questions
Is Manjeera water hard?
Is Manjeera water hard?
Soft to moderately hard at the reservoir, with published total hardness of 60 to 165 mg/L against an acceptable limit of 200. Your tap can read higher, because the board blends and rotates sources and many buildings top up from bores.
Does a shower filter for Hyderabad water remove iron?
Does a shower filter for Hyderabad water remove iron?
No. A bathing filter reduces hardness, chlorine and sediment. It does not remove iron, heavy metals or bacteria, and it does not lower TDS. If a lab test shows iron is your real problem, that needs treatment further upstream.
Can I use the borewell version on board water?
Can I use the borewell version on board water?
Yes. The borewell-rated cartridge is built for harder input, so it simply has spare capacity on reservoir supply. It is the safer pick for any building that switches to tankers in summer.
How do I know which source my building uses?
How do I know which source my building uses?
Ask your society whether the sump is filled by the water board, a borewell or tankers, then test at the shower with a TDS meter or test strip. The home hardness test guide explains each method and its cost.
How often should the cartridge be changed in a borewell home?
How often should the cartridge be changed in a borewell home?
Every 3 to 4 months for most homes, sooner if the water carries a lot of sediment. The cartridge turns from white to brown as it fills, so the colour tells you when.
Will softer water stop my hair fall?
Will softer water stop my hair fall?
It can reduce breakage and the coated feel that makes shedding look worse. Hair fall also depends on genetics, stress, sleep, diet and medical causes, so see a dermatologist if shedding continues after a couple of months.
