Hyderabad Tap Water: Manjeera, Krishna or Godavari?

Manjeera water is soft to moderately hard at source, and it is only one of six supplies feeding Hyderabad. Published sampling puts its total hardness between 60 and 165 mg/L, comfortably under India's acceptable limit. Krishna water runs a little higher, and borewell water several times higher again.
That gap is why two homes on the same street report completely different hair and skin experiences. Which reservoir or bore fills your tank matters more than your address.
This guide maps each source to the areas it feeds and compares them on hardness, using HMWSSB records, published sampling and BIS limits.
Is Manjeera water hard or soft?
Soft to moderately hard at source. A 2020 study sampling three points on the Manjeera system recorded total hardness of 60, 80 and 165 mg/L, with TDS between 198 and 515 mg/L. All three sit under the BIS acceptable total hardness limit of 200 mg/L.
The Manjeera dam at Zahirabad read softest at 60 mg/L, Sangareddy 80 mg/L, and the Algole point highest at 165 mg/L with 515 mg/L TDS.
Those are reservoir readings, not tap readings. The water is treated at Rajampet and Kalabgoor, then pushed through kilometres of network before it reaches your tank.
Where does Hyderabad get its water from?
From six sources, according to HMWSSB's own source register: Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar on the Musi, Singur and Manjeera on the Manjeera river, Akkampally on the Krishna, and Sripada Yellampally on the Godavari. Together they carry a normal drawal of 597 MGD.
The two big rivers do most of the work. Akkampally draws 270 MGD from the Krishna and Yellampally 162 MGD from the Godavari, against 45 MGD from the Manjeera.
Manjeera has not been retired, despite older reports saying so. HMWSSB still records active drawal, and a June 2026 burst on the Manjeera Phase-2 main near Rudraram cut supply to more than a dozen colonies.
Which Hyderabad areas get Krishna, Godavari or Manjeera water?
Broadly: the Krishna network covers the west and the south, the Godavari network covers the north and north-west, and the Manjeera line runs from Ramachandrapuram through Kukatpally across to Ameerpet. Anything outside those grids falls back on borewells and tankers.

Kukatpally and Miyapur appear twice, and that is not an error. Both sit on the Manjeera and Godavari Phase-1 networks, so your sump can fill from either.
The Krishna list comes from an October 2025 shutdown notice for Krishna Phase-3 Ring Main-1, which named 46 localities. Shutdown notices are the clearest public record of which colony sits on which line.
Is Krishna or Godavari water harder than Manjeera water?
Krishna water is slightly harder than Manjeera, and still well inside limits. A twelve-month study of Nagarjuna Sagar, running April 2025 to March 2026, recorded total hardness from 127 to 197 mg/L and TDS from 186 to 512 mg/L. Peak hardness landed January to March.
The seasonal swing matters more than the average. TDS bottomed at 186 mg/L in April, spiked to 512 mg/L in October after monsoon runoff, then hardness climbed through the dry winter to 197 mg/L in March.
Godavari water is harder to pin down. Published sampling for the Yellampally reach is thin, so treat it as reservoir-type supply rather than assuming a number. A TDS meter on its own will mislead you here, because TDS and hardness are two different numbers.
Why is Hyderabad borewell water so much harder?
Because it is groundwater sitting in fractured granite, picking up calcium and magnesium the whole time. A study co-authored with the Central Ground Water Board's southern region found total hardness in Hyderabad city groundwater ranging from 250 to 801 mg/L, averaging 442. TDS averaged 893 mg/L.
Set that against the BIS thresholds in IS 10500:2012, which put acceptable total hardness at 200 mg/L and desirable TDS at 500 mg/L. City groundwater sits well above both.
Local sampling agrees. Borewells around Saroornagar and LB Nagar returned 303 to 396 mg/L total hardness, with calcium above the BIS ceiling at Badangpet and Balapur. The same spread turns up in typical borewell readings from Indian apartment blocks, and it is why people ask whether borewell water is safe for bathing.
Does your water source change what happens to your hair and skin?
Yes, mostly through the calcium and magnesium load. Reservoir supply at 60 to 200 mg/L leaves a thin mineral film on hair and scalp. Borewell supply at 300 to 800 mg/L leaves a heavy one, which is why complaints cluster in bore-fed pockets.
That film stops shampoo from lathering and leaves hair looking dry. It does not pull hair from the root, but it roughens the strand, so ordinary shedding looks and feels far worse than it is. Genetics, stress, sleep and diet also matter.
Your source also shifts underneath you. A reservoir-fed home taking tanker top-ups through a summer shortage is on groundwater for those weeks, which is exactly why hair fall spikes through tanker season.

What actually helps once you know your source?
Cut the hardness and chlorine reaching your hair at every wash, then keep the routine after it light. What you pick depends on whether your building runs on reservoir supply or on groundwater.
- Stored RO water works, but hauling buckets for every wash is not a plan anyone keeps up.
- Vinegar or yogurt rinses decalcify hair briefly and do nothing for the next wash, or for skin.
- A shower or tap filter treats water at the point of use, every time, with no plumbing work.
What can a filter do, and what can it not?
A Care Dale filter reduces the hardness, chlorine and physical contaminants that drive dryness and breakage, so shampoo lathers and skincare absorbs. It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals.

How long before you notice a difference?
Give it about four weeks. Most people report softer hair and less skin tightness inside two to three weeks, because the mineral film stops rebuilding. Shedding and scalp comfort take longer, closer to two months. There is a week-by-week account of what changes if you want the detail.
An independent clinical study of 50 participants washing in water above 500 ppm TDS recorded a 78% reduction in hair fall over four weeks, an 11% increase in scalp hydration, and 87% saying they would recommend it. Results vary from person to person.
