Is Borewell Water Safe for Bathing and Washing Hair? What Indian Labs Say (2026)

Short answer: Borewell water is groundwater, pulled up from 100 to 500 feet through a private bore. On healthy intact skin, the untreated stuff during a bath is mostly fine. For hair? Rarely. Most urban Indian borewells sail past the BIS 10500:2012 hardness limit of 200 mg/L, and plenty cross the 600 mg/L "permissible" ceiling. That hardness, plus iron and sometimes fluoride or arsenic tagging along, beats up the hair shaft and dries the scalp. The microbes from the bore itself? Not really the issue.

What is actually in Indian borewell water?

Borewell water is groundwater pumped from aquifers 80 to 400 feet down. Nobody chlorinates it at source. Which means its chemistry just mirrors the rock it seeped through. CGWB's National Compilation on Dynamic Ground Water Resources of India (2024) flags close to 20% of assessed groundwater blocks as chemically "non-potable" by at least one BIS 10500 parameter. The WHO doesn't mince words: "safe drinking-water is essential for health". Same logic for scalp water.

Hardness: calcium and magnesium

Calcium and magnesium salts make water "hard." BIS 10500:2012 sets the acceptable limit at 200 mg/L as CaCO3 and the permissible at 600 mg/L. Indian borewell samples? Routinely 300 to 900 mg/L. Skin contact carries no direct health risk. It's the single biggest reason borewell water destroys hair, though.

Iron and manganese

BIS caps iron at 0.3 mg/L and manganese at 0.1 mg/L. Cross those numbers and you get rust rings on the tiles and a brassy tint creeping into lighter hair. Not toxic at bathing levels. Rough on coloured hair, though.

Fluoride and arsenic

Excess fluoride shows up across parts of Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Haryana. Arsenic clusters in the Ganga-Brahmaputra plain: West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, parts of Uttar Pradesh. Uranium has been turning up in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan groundwater too. Drinking is the main exposure route. Not bathing. Still, if your district is on any of those lists, test first.

Microbial load

Shallow or poorly cased borewells pick up E. coli when septic tanks sit too close (BIS recommends 15 m of separation). For intact adult skin, microbial risk in bath water is low-but-not-zero. It climbs with open cuts, eczema, or stagnant overhead tanks where Legionella breeds.

What does borewell water do to skin and hair?

Hard borewell water hurts hair more than skin. Calcium and magnesium ions latch onto shampoo surfactants and form an insoluble "soap scum" that coats the shaft and scalp. Layer on layer.

Hair shaft damage

A 2018 study in the International Journal of Trichology measured tensile strength drop after fifteen washes in hard water (~300 mg/L CaCO3). Reversible, but real. Scalp irritation

A healthy scalp sits at pH 4.5 to 5.5. Hard water is mildly alkaline (pH 7.5 to 8.5 in many Indian bores), and the soap-scum film blocks sebum. You feel it as itch, dandruff-like flakes, that tight post-wash feel. A 2016 King's College London study linked hard-water exposure in infancy to higher atopic dermatitis risk31339-2/fulltext).

Iron staining

Anything above 0.3 mg/L iron oxidises when it meets shampoo and air, then deposits onto the shaft. Light brown turns brassy. Coloured hair fades faster.

When IS borewell water safe enough to bathe in?

Three conditions need to line up: hardness within the BIS permissible limit, no microbial contamination, no geogenic spikes of fluoride or arsenic. None of that can be eyeballed. You need a lab test.

The acceptable threshold

For bathing with no cosmetic damage, aim for the BIS acceptable limit of 200 mg/L CaCO3 or below. The 200 to 600 mg/L band is "permissible" on paper, already harsh on hair in practice. Above 600 mg/L, BIS flags the water as unfit.

The treated-tank scenario

Apartment complexes often blend municipal supply with borewell in a common sump, dose it with bleaching powder, and pump it up. With residual chlorine of 0.2 to 0.5 mg/L at the tap, microbial risk drops to low. The chemistry, hardness and iron, stays the same.

Is borewell water safe for daily bathing?

For healthy intact skin, yes. Daily bathing in borewell water is microbiologically low-risk if the overhead tank is chlorinated and cleaned. The cosmetic risk dominates: hardness above 200 mg/L damages hair and dries the scalp, so test the bore once before assuming safety.

Can borewell water cause hair fall?

Not directly. But hard water above 300 mg/L weakens the shaft, blocks sebum, and makes telogen shedding more visible. A 2018 trichology study documented tensile-strength loss after fifteen hard-water washes. Treat the water and cosmetic damage usually reverses within four to twelve weeks.

Is borewell water bad for the skin?

What TDS is safe for bathing in India?

Can I wash my hair daily with borewell water?

You can. Most dermatologists suggest two or three washes a week if hardness sits above 400 mg/L. A weekly clarifying or chelating shampoo helps strip mineral buildup. The real fix is treating the water at the sump or the showerhead.

Should I install RO at the shower for borewell water?

No. RO is built for drinking water. It strips minerals down to 30 to 80 ppm TDS, wastes three to four litres per litre, and runs at flow rates too low for a shower. For bathing, ultrafiltration plus a hardness-neutralising stage is the right level.

How often should I test my borewell water?

Test once at installation with a full BIS 10500 panel from an NABL-accredited lab, and retest each year. In fluoride-endemic (Rajasthan, AP, Telangana) or arsenic-endemic (West Bengal, Bihar, Assam) districts, every six months.
