Is Hyderabad Water Hard? Why It Triggers Hair Fall and Dry Skin

_Last updated: 17 June 2026._
If you moved to Hyderabad and your hair started shedding or your skin turned dry and tight within a few weeks, you are asking the same question thousands of residents ask: is the water to blame? The honest answer is that it depends on your area and your source. Here is how to tell whether your water is hard, why it affects hair and skin, and what actually helps.
Is Hyderabad water hard or soft?
It depends on where your building gets its water. Hyderabad runs on two very different sources, and they sit at opposite ends of the hardness scale.
The river water from the Krishna and Godavari projects supplies much of the core and old city through the city water board and this supply is typically moderate at about 150-250 ppm. However, the vast majority of the western IT corridor and newer gated communities use borewell groundwater as their source of water, which is much harder than the river water (generally greater than 300 ppm, with many instances far greater).
A flat in the old city has a completely different type of water than a high-rise in Gachibowli. This can be evidenced by what happens during summer months: a large share of the city leans on borewell groundwater. This fact is the reason there are so many complaints about hair and skin issues from people living in IT suburbs.
Which Hyderabad areas have the hardest water?
Most of Hyderabad's toughest groundwater is found west of the city, where it is also dependent on borewells such as the IT corridor. The city area that receives water from rivers has softer water than the suburbs.
| Area / zone | Usual source | Hardness tendency |
|---|---|---|
| Gachibowli, Kondapur, Madhapur, HITEC City, Nanakramguda, Manikonda | Borewell + tanker | Hard, often 300+ ppm |
| Kukatpally, Miyapur, Bachupally, outer ORR communities | Mostly borewell | Hard and variable |
| Old city and core zones on board supply | Krishna and Godavari rivers | Moderate, around 150 to 250 ppm |
These tendencies should not be considered absolute predictions; however, the water tank type and borehole depth will also affect every building differently. Determining the amount of water at your site can be done by taking a quick and economical measurement.
Does Hyderabad water cause hair fall like Bangalore?
Hyderabad water can worsen hair fall in the same way Bangalore's does, but it is rarely the single cause. Hard water does not pull hair out by the root; it weakens and roughens the strand and irritates the scalp, which makes everyday shedding look and feel much worse.
The calcium and magnesium in hard water bind to the hair shaft and scalp, leaving a mineral film that makes hair dry, brittle and prone to breakage, while hard water also strips the scalp and aggravates shedding. On top of that, residue stops shampoos lathering and conditioners absorbing, so hair feels worse the longer you live with it.
Many local forums believe hair loss is caused by the iron found in water. However, most households are affected by calcium and magnesium (hardness) rather than iron; resolving this distinction is vital when selecting an appropriate remedy as reducing hardness will soothe both hair and skin.
How to check if your water is hard
You do not require a laboratory to obtain a valid result. A quick home-based test can help determine if hardness is the issue; therefore, you do not waste money trying to solve the problem.
- The soap-shake test: add a little liquid soap to a bottle of your tap water, shake, and watch. Lots of lather and clear water means soft; little lather with a cloudy, milky layer means hard.
- A TDS meter: a cheap handheld meter gives a rough mineral reading in seconds, useful for tracking changes after a fix.
- A water-hardness test strip or a BIS-accredited lab test for an exact figure in mg/L.
For context, Indian standards based on BIS permissible limits for drinking water treat hardness up to 200 mg/L as acceptable, so anything well above that is worth acting on. The full home-testing method, with costs, walks through each option.
What does hard water do to your skin?
The high mineral content in hard water causes dry, irritated skin by washing away natural oil and altering the pH of your skin. Therefore, new residents in Hyderabad frequently experience a feeling of tightness, flaking and breakouts shortly after arriving. Additionally to leaving a film on the hair, these minerals also leave a residue on the skin.
This residue raises the skin's surface pH away from its naturally acidic, protective state, weakens the barrier, and leaves moisturisers struggling to absorb. People often report dry patches, itchiness, dull skin and product that "just sits on top." A gentle, barrier-friendly skincare routine built for hard-water cities helps, but it works far better once the water itself is softer.
What actually helps with Hyderabad's hard water?
The real fix is to reduce the hardness and chlorine hitting your hair and skin at every wash, then back it up with a gentle routine. Most popular forum remedies only paper over the problem.
- Washing hair with stored drinking or RO water does help, because soft water is gentler, but carrying buckets is impractical day to day.
- Yogurt, vinegar or lemon rinses can temporarily de-scale hair, but they do nothing for the next wash or for skin.
- A shower or tap filter treats the water at the point of use, every single time, which makes it the most practical long-term option. It needs no plumbing work, fits a standard Hyderabad bathroom in minutes, and keeps protecting you whether the day's supply is borewell or tanker.
A Care Dale filter, for instance, reduces the hardness, chlorine and physical contaminants that drive the dryness and breakage, so your shampoo lathers, your conditioner absorbs and your skincare finally works. It is not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals, and it works best alongside good nutrition and a gentle routine rather than on its own. For borewell-heavy homes, also read whether borewell water is safe for bathing and hair.
Whichever route you take, re-test your water every few months. Hyderabad's borewell and tanker mix shifts with the season and the falling water table, so hardness that reads fine in monsoon can climb sharply by April, and any filter cartridge needs replacing once it is saturated. Tracking your TDS is the simplest way to know your fix is still working.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Hyderabad water hard or soft? It varies by source. River supply from the Krishna and Godavari projects to the core city is moderate, usually 150 to 250 ppm, while borewell-fed areas in the IT corridor and outer suburbs are genuinely hard, often above 300 ppm. Because tanker and borewell water differ building to building, a quick home test is the only reliable way to know yours.
Which areas in Hyderabad have the hardest water? The borewell-dependent western IT belt sees the worst hardness, including Gachibowli, Kondapur, Madhapur, Nanakramguda and Manikonda, along with many outer ORR gated communities that rely on groundwater. Older central zones on river-fed board supply tend to be gentler. Within any area, bore depth and tanker sourcing still cause home-to-home variation.
Is it the iron in Hyderabad water that causes hair fall? Usually no. The measurable driver of hair and skin damage in most homes is hardness, the calcium and magnesium content, not iron. Hard water coats the hair shaft and scalp, causing dryness, breakage and worse shedding. Reducing hardness is therefore the change that helps most, which is why softening the water matters more than chasing iron.
Does washing hair with drinking or RO water help? Yes, but it is impractical. Soft, low-mineral water is genuinely gentler on hair and reduces breakage, which is why the stored-water trick works for some people. The problem is doing it every wash with buckets of RO water. Treating the bathing water at the tap or shower achieves the same softness without the daily effort.
Is borewell water in Hyderabad safe for bathing? It is generally safe to bathe in, but hard borewell water is tough on hair and skin over time, causing dryness, breakage and irritation. The mineral load, not bacteria, is the usual problem for most apartments. Reducing the hardness and chlorine before it reaches your hair and skin is the practical way to protect them while still using borewell supply.
How quickly will my hair and skin improve after fixing the water? Most people notice softer hair and less tightness within two to four weeks of reducing hard-water exposure, with shedding and scalp comfort improving over a couple of months. Hard water is only one factor, so results are best when you also address sleep, stress, diet and any underlying medical causes alongside the water change.
