Which Mysore homes actually need a hard water filter?
Mostly homes on bores and tankers. Roughly nine litres in ten reaching a Mysuru tap is treated surface water from the Cauvery head works at Belagola, Hongalli and Melapura and the Kabini intake at Bidaragudu. City tube wells add about 38 MLD of a roughly 348 MLD daily supply, and that bore water is harder, varying from one bore to the next.
The outskirts are a separate story. More than 50,000 residential sites in MUDA and MUDA-approved layouts were being served borewell water, outside the reach of Vani Vilas Water Works, and the weathered granite beneath them loads that water with calcium and magnesium. Bores there have also been sunk deeper over the years, with rising mineral content.
Which filter suits your Mysuru supply zone?
| Supply zone | Source | Hardness tendency | Filter and price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yadavagiri and Vijayanagara reservoir wards | Treated Cauvery from Hongalli | Soft to moderately hard | Municipal, ₹1,499 |
| Kuvempunagar reservoir wards | Treated Kabini from Bidaragudu | Similar to the Cauvery supply | Municipal, ₹1,499 |
| Devanur and German Press reservoir zones | Treated Cauvery from Melapura | Moderate | Municipal, ₹1,499 |
| Tube-well pockets inside corporation limits | About 1,025 city bores and pumps | Harder; varies bore to bore | Borewell/Tanker, ₹1,899 |
| MUDA and private layouts on the outskirts | Borewell and tanker groundwater | Hardest and most variable | Borewell/Tanker, ₹1,899 |
The Municipal filter (4.97/5, 515 reviews) is built to handle inlet water up to about 800 ppm TDS. The Borewell/Tanker filter (4.95/5, 295 reviews) is built to handle inlet water up to about 1,800 ppm TDS and adds an extra hardness layer. Both figures describe incoming water, not a reduction.
When is the best time to test Mysore water?
Between February and May. A year-long survey of the Cauvery around Krishnarajasagara recorded total hardness of roughly 34 to 44 mg/L in the monsoon, 80 to 102 mg/L after it, and 116 to 160 mg/L before the rains, which is also when dependence on bores rises. A reading taken in August can make your water look softer than it is for much of the year.
- Soap shake: plenty of lather in clear water means soft; thin lather with a milky film means hard.
- TDS meter: a rough mineral reading in seconds, though TDS and hardness are not the same number.
- Hardness strip or a BIS-accredited lab: the exact figure in mg/L.
The full method, with costs, is in our guide to testing hard water at home.
What does a bathroom filter change on bore-fed Mysuru water?
Care Dale works like a water softener for your bathroom, without salt, ion exchange or plumbing. Sediment is trapped first, the CareTec mesh tackles dissolved calcium and magnesium, and a final layer takes out chlorine. Water leaves at pH 5.5 to 6.5, with no chemicals and no waste water, so shampoo lathers properly and less mineral film is left on the scalp.
It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals. It is meant for bathing, not drinking. Hair responds to many things besides water, including diet, stress, sleep and genetics, so expect a filter to help with dryness and roughness rather than to cure anything.
What does a filter cost to keep running?
| Item | Municipal | Borewell/Tanker |
|---|---|---|
| Filter | ₹1,499 |
₹1,899 |
| Replacement cartridge | ₹699 | ₹899 |
| Cartridge life | 3 to 4 months, or about 25,000 litres | |
| Installation | About 2 minutes, no plumber | |
For comparison, a whole-house salt softener costs ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 upfront plus ₹6,000+ a year in salt, and a bathroom RO runs ₹50,000+. For a home on soft piped water with only a hard bore as backup, a single tap or shower filter in Mysore is usually the more sensible spend.

Mysore hard water filter questions
Is Kabini water softer than Cauvery water?
Is Kabini water softer than Cauvery water?
Much the same. Both are treated river water, and wards on the Kuvempunagar reservoir, fed from the Kabini intake, see a supply similar to the Cauvery zones. Both usually sit within Indian limits.
I live in a MUDA layout on borewell water. Which version fits?
I live in a MUDA layout on borewell water. Which version fits?
The Borewell/Tanker version. Outer layouts on bores show the hardest and most variable water around the city, and this version is built to handle inlet water up to about 1,800 ppm TDS, with an extra hardness layer.
Will a filter stop my hair fall?
Will a filter stop my hair fall?
No filter cures hair fall. It reduces the hardness and chlorine that leave hair dry, rough and prone to breakage. Shedding also depends on diet, stress, sleep and genetics, so speak to a dermatologist if it persists.
My bore water leaves orange marks. Will this help?
My bore water leaves orange marks. Will this help?
Orange or brown marks usually point to iron, and this kind of filtration does not remove iron. It deals with hardness, chlorine and sediment only.
Does it fit a shower arm as well as a tap?
Does it fit a shower arm as well as a tap?
Yes. It fits a tap with a removable aerator or sits between a threaded shower arm and the shower head, and both fittings come in the box.
Will it noticeably reduce flow?
Will it noticeably reduce flow?
Only slightly on normal pressure. If flow falls sharply after a few weeks, the cartridge has likely filled with sediment and needs replacing.
