Mysore Water: Hard or Soft?
Share
Last updated: August 2026.
Mysore is one of the few large Indian cities where the piped supply is genuinely kind to hair and skin. The city sits close to both its sources, the Cauvery and the Kabini, so treated water arrives soft to moderately hard, not heavily mineralised.
The hardness complaints come from a narrower group: homes on city tube wells, and the layouts beyond the corporation network still running on borewells and tankers. Below is where Mysuru's water really comes from, which pockets run harder, how to test your own tap, and what a dermatologist-certified, clinically tested filter can and cannot do.
Is Mysore water hard or soft?
It depends on whether your building is on the corporation pipeline or on a bore. Treated river water piped by Vani Vilas Water Works is soft to moderately hard and usually within Indian drinking limits. Groundwater in the hard-rock country around the city is a harder proposition.
Where does Mysuru's water actually come from?
The city draws from two rivers. Cauvery head works sit downstream of the Krishnarajasagara reservoir near Belagola, Hongalli and Melapura villages, while the Kabini intake is at Bidaragudu. Together with city tube wells these schemes deliver roughly 348 million litres a day, of which the tube wells contribute about 38 MLD.
Roughly nine litres in ten reaching a Mysuru tap is treated surface water.
Why is Mysuru's piped water gentler than most big-city supply?
Because the water barely travels. The Belagola pipeline runs about 8.8 km to the treatment plant, Hongalli about 12 km and the Kabini main about 24 km. Short routes mean the city takes the river close to source and needs little groundwater to top up.
Compare that with Bengaluru, where the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board notes the Cauvery lies about 86 km south of the city and newly added village areas still run on borewell sources. That distance is why hardness swings so sharply across Bengaluru's borewell-heavy neighbourhoods. Mysuru is not the same conversation.
How hard is the river itself?
A year-long survey of the Cauvery around Krishnarajasagara recorded total hardness of roughly 34 to 44 mg/L during the monsoon, 80 to 102 mg/L after it, and 116 to 160 mg/L before the rains. A separate pre-monsoon sample near Mysore city measured total hardness at 116 mg/L. Both sit under the Indian acceptable limit of 200 mg/L.
Which parts of Mysuru have the hardest water?
The hard water sits in the pockets the pipeline never reached. Wards fed by the Belagola, Hongalli, Melapura and Kabini schemes get the mild treated supply. Peripheral layouts pull theirs out of weathered granite, and that rock is what loads it with calcium and magnesium.
| Area / zone | Usual source | Hardness tendency |
|---|---|---|
| Wards on the Yadavagiri and Vijayanagara reservoirs | Treated Cauvery from Hongalli | Soft to moderately hard, usually within limits |
| Wards on the Kuvempunagar reservoir | Treated Kabini from Bidaragudu | Similar to the Cauvery supply |
| Devanur and German Press reservoir zones | Treated Cauvery from Melapura | Moderate |
| Tube-well pockets inside the corporation limits | About 1,025 city bores and pumps | Harder; varies bore to bore |
| MUDA and private layouts on the outskirts | Borewell and tanker groundwater | Hardest and most variable |
Why are the outskirts different?
Because they sit outside the pipeline. More than 50,000 residential sites in MUDA and MUDA-approved layouts were being served borewell water, with Vani Vilas Water Works covering only localities inside corporation limits.
Depth compounds it. A retired hydrogeologist in Mysuru has described borewells deepening from 40 to 60 metres to 300 metres and beyond, with rising TDS and mineral content. It is the same pattern seen in borewell readings across Indian apartment blocks.
Is Mysore water good for hair?
For most households on the treated supply, yes, and that is worth saying plainly. Hard water damages hair by leaving a mineral film on the shaft and scalp, and Mysuru's piped water carries comparatively little of it. On a deep bore, the answer changes.
Once that film builds up, hair feels brittle, coarse and unmanageable, shampoo stops lathering and conditioner cannot get through. An Indian dermatology study found significantly more magnesium deposited on hair washed in hard water, although it did not report visible surface damage under the microscope. Dermatologists describe the same long-term pattern of hard-water hair damage in clinic.
Lab evidence on whether hardness weakens the fibre itself is mixed, so treat water as one factor. Stress, diet, sleep and genetics all affect how much you shed, so it is worth working out whether your hair fall is really the water or something else. Skin follows the same pattern, with tightness and flaking after a wash the usual first sign, because hard water pushes your skin's surface pH upwards.
How do you test your own Mysuru water?
You do not need a laboratory. Two minutes at your own tap tells you whether you have a real hardness problem, before you spend anything.
- The soap shake test: shake a little soap in a bottle of your water. Plenty of lather with clear water means soft; thin lather with a cloudy, milky film means hard.
- A TDS meter: an inexpensive pocket instrument that gives a rough mineral reading in seconds, useful for tracking tanker-to-tanker change. Do remember that TDS and hardness are not the same number.
- A hardness strip or a BIS-accredited lab test for an exact figure in mg/L.
Indian standards set a desirable TDS of 500 mg/L and acceptable hardness of 200 mg/L, per the BIS limits for drinking water. Test between February and May, when river hardness peaks and bore dependence rises. For the detail, here is every home hardness test compared, with what each one costs.
What actually helps if your Mysuru water is hard?
Reduce the hardness and chlorine reaching your hair and skin at each wash, then back it with a gentle routine. The remedies traded around local groups are stopgaps, forgotten by the next wash.
- Washing with stored RO water genuinely helps, but hauling buckets for every wash is not something anyone keeps up.
- Vinegar or lemon rinses strip mineral build-up briefly and do nothing for the next wash or for skin.
- A shower or tap filter treats water at the point of use, every time, with no plumbing work and no landlord conversation.
How does a point-of-use filter change a hard-water wash?
A Care Dale filter reduces the hardness, chlorine and sediment that drive dryness and breakage, so shampoo lathers and skincare absorbs properly. It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals. To be plain about the whole category, no shower filter, Care Dale included, addresses iron, heavy metals, chloramine, TDS or bacteria.
The CareTec 3-layer system runs pre-filtration for sediment, CareTec ultra filtration for hardness, and a final layer for chlorine and impurities. It blocks 92% of calcium and removes 96% of chlorine, and uses no salt or chemicals. In a bore-fed apartment, test first, then match the filter to the water you actually measured.
Expect a gradual shift. Most people find hair feels softer and the scalp less tight after two to four weeks. In an independent clinical study, 50 participants washing in water above 500 ppm TDS for four weeks saw a 78% hair fall reduction and an 11% scalp hydration increase, and 87% would recommend it. No filter cures hair fall on its own, so diet, stress and sleep still matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mysore water hard or soft? It depends on the source. Treated Cauvery and Kabini water piped by the corporation is soft to moderately hard and usually within Indian limits. Borewell and tanker supply in the outer layouts runs harder, so a home test beats any area-wide answer.
Is Mysore water good for hair? On treated river supply, generally yes; on bore-fed supply, less so. A shower or tap filter reduces the hardness minerals, chlorine, odours and micro-particles that damage hair and skin at every wash. It does not lower TDS or remove iron, heavy metals or bacteria, because it is filtration, not a purifier.
Where does the drinking water supply in Mysore come from? From two rivers. Cauvery head works sit downstream of Krishnarajasagara at Belagola, Hongalli and Melapura, and the Kabini intake is at Bidaragudu. Treated water reaches homes through service reservoirs at Yadavagiri, Vijayanagara, Kuvempunagar and Devanur.
What is the Mysore water supply contact number? Water supply is run by Vani Vilas Water Works, the water arm of Mysuru City Corporation, not a separate state board. Helpline and zonal numbers change often, so take the current one from the corporation's own portal rather than a directory listing.
How good is Mysore water quality? Surveys of the Cauvery around Krishnarajasagara put total hardness between roughly 34 mg/L in the monsoon and 160 mg/L before it, under the Indian acceptable limit of 200 mg/L. Groundwater in the surrounding granite is harder and far more variable.
What is the main Mysore water source? The Cauvery. It carries most of the city's daily volume through the Belagola, Hongalli and Melapura schemes, with the Kabini scheme at Bidaragudu added in 2012 and city tube wells a much smaller share.
