Shower Filter Troubleshooting in India 2026: Bad Smell, Low Pressure, Leaks & Cloudy Water — What's Going Wrong and How to Fix It

There are 5 types of common complaints related to showering in Indian households (1) Bad smell of water from the showerhead (2) Low water flow after installation (3) Leaking at the joints (4) Water is cloudy or brown (5) Shower is noisy.

Each of these problems usually has two to three possible causes, and all of them can be diagnosed and resolved in less than 15 minutes without the assistance of a plumber.

This article explains each of the five types of symptoms, the potential reasons for the symptoms, and a step-by-step method for correcting the problem.

Why does my shower filter smell bad or musty?

There are typically three causes of a foul odor coming from a shower filter. Each of the three situations can be resolved in different ways, and the actual smell will usually give you a good indication as to which one it is.

Specific to the tap and the filtered spout, the cartridge has expired based on chlorine odors. The carbon and CareTec™ stages of the cartridge are depleted resulting in chlorine passing completely through the cartridge.

Compare the smell from both a kitchen unfiltered tap and the showerhead filtered. If they smell the same you will need to replace the cartridge.

A filter cartridge that has been sitting unused for longer than a week will usually build up biofilm in the filter housing (such as on a holiday or at a secondary residence). The only way to correct this issue is with a citric acid cleaning procedure.

To do this you simply need to remove the filter cartridge, soak the filter housing in a solution of 30g citric acid per 500ml of water for 20 minutes, then rinse the filter housing and reassemble. If the bad odour is still present after the first cleaning, replace the filter cartridge as it will have developed a biofilm as well.

A rotten egg smell (sulfurous) is indicative of the presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the water supply; there are many bore wells with this issue throughout India.

A typical shower filter - including Care Dale - is not designed to target H2S specifically. If you are on a borewell supply with a higher hardness-mineral load, the Care Dale Borewell variant is tuned for that profile, but H2S itself needs to be treated upstream at the overhead tank or with a dedicated whole-house solution.

Why is my water pressure low after installing the shower filter?

The most frequent complaint after installing a filter is the drop in pressure: there are four causes that are responsible for nearly every instance of this problem.

The ideal flow rate for a Care Dale filter is 6-10 liters/minute with a building pressure of 1.5-2.5 bar. To time how long it takes to fill a 5-liter bucket; healthy is <30 seconds, borderline is 30-45 seconds and >60 seconds indicates cartridge end-of-life or upstream supply issue - the diagnostic provides quick, accurate data to remove uncertainty in determining cartridge end-of-life or upstream supply issues.

Why is my shower filter leaking?

The majority of leaks on shower filters are usually located where there are threaded joints but do not typically happen from the filter body. The threaded joints would include the top inlet (between the filter and the shower arm) as well as the bottom outlet (between the filter and the showerhead).

The majority of the leaks occur at the joint between the shower filter and the shower arm. There are three reasons for this most of the time: Teflon tape was wrapped in the wrong direction (it unwound when tightened); Teflon tape was wrapped around too few times (less than three); or the threads on the shower arm were worn or cross-threaded.

In either situation, you can repair the leak by removing the connection between the two. Clean both sets of threads with a dry cloth, wrap the male threads in five clockwise turns of new Teflon tape, and hand-tighten the connection followed by tightening it an additional quarter-turn with a wrench.

Be careful not to over-tighten; if you attempt to chase a slow drip after tightening the connection by more than a quarter-turn, you may strip the threads.

Leak at the bottom joint of the filter. Same cause and same fix as at the upper joint. Apply five turns clockwise of new Teflon tape, then hand-tighten, and an additional quarter turn with a wrench to the outlet threads. If still leaking, likely the internal washer in the showerhead is split (₹50-₹100 replacement at any hardware store).

Leak from the housing seam itself. Very rare. Indicates a bent O-ring in the housing collar was pinched during cartridge change down, or the collar was over-torqued.

Open housing, check that O-ring is seated properly then reassemble with a hand-tight only.

Why is my water cloudy, milky or brown after the filter?

Discharge colour tells you exactly what is happening.

Starting the shower, there will be a milky white cloudiness for 5-10 seconds. This will be caused by the Air trapped in the filter, not leaking or faulted. This is completely normal for all new installs and for filters left without water for overnight. The milky cloudiness will clear in approximately 10 seconds.

It is normal (and harmless) to have carbon dust from the new media to be released into the water when you first install your new cartridge (for the first 3-5 uses). To completely remove/cloudy discharge, run your shower at full flow for 5 minutes after installation and it should be completely removed by the time you take your 3rd shower.

Brown/rust colour in discharge can be caused by: 1) The sediment stage is clogged and pressure is pushing particulates through - the cartridge needs replacement. 2) The cartridge was installed upside down with the arrow pointing up instead of down - unscrew, flip, and re-install. 3) Inlet iron load is so high that the cartridge has loaded prematurely - replace it and consider switching to the borewell variant for the next change.

If milky discharge persists beyond a week with no visible white powder, the cause is likely residual mineral deposits inside the housing - clean with citric acid and, if the cloudiness continues, replace the cartridge.

Why is my shower filter making noise - whistling, hissing or vibrating?

Noise at a shower filter is unusual and almost always points to one of two things.

A piercing whistle from the upper joint usually means pressurised water is escaping through a small gap in the Teflon seal where the tape was unevenly wrapped or over-stretched during installation. The fix is to remove the old tape, dry both threads, wrap five even clockwise turns of new Teflon, and reassemble hand-tight plus a quarter turn.

Vibration/Hammering When Shower Off - This is not the filter, but water hammer caused by a bad check valve or angle valve at some point in your building's plumbing. The filter is downstream of the actual cause.

If you have installed a new filter, and now experience this condition, the new filter may be creating back pressure on the existing faulty valve. Solution: replace the faulty valve, not the filter.

Sputtering from the showerhead. This is a common problem, especially after shutting off the building's water supply. If it has been happening for more than 30 seconds while you are running the shower, or if it continues to happen after attempting to do so, you likely have an issue with the air vent in the building's plumbing line and need to contact an experienced plumber.

How do you tell the difference between a faulty cartridge and a faulty install?

Five physical checks tell you which side of the fault the problem is on.

Cartridge inspection: Look through the clear plastic outer casing of your Care Dale filter and examine the brown/black colour of the filter material. An even, dark brown to black colour indicates the end of the filter. If only part of the filter is darker than the rest, the cartridge has been installed incorrectly.

Flow measurement: Fill a 5-litre container at its maximum flow rate; expect to fill it between 30-45 seconds for a healthy filter, 45 seconds to 60 seconds for a serviceable filter, and over 60 seconds for an end-of-life filter (or fault upstream).

Smell sample: Smell your unfiltered tap water and then smell the shower water after filtering with a Care Dale filter. If the smells from both sources are identical, then the carbon filter is exhausted.

Pressure test: Testing the shower head to see if you get a dramatic increase in flow rate when you partially unscrew it will indicate that the shower head is at fault, not the filter cartridge. If the flow is the same when bypassing the shower head, then the filter cartridge is the source of the reduced flow.

Leak test: Shut off the water supply to your filter and dry the joints; then slowly turn on the water supply while looking for leaks where the joints are connected. If there is a leak, the fault lies with how the filter was installed, not the filter cartridge.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my shower filter smell like rotten eggs?

If you smell rotten eggs or sulphur in your supply water, there are high levels of hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) in your borewell, which is common in many parts of India. Most municipal shower filters are not designed to filter out H₂S specifically.

The Care Dale Borewell variant is built for the higher hardness-mineral and TDS load typical of borewell supplies, but H₂S itself is best treated upstream at the overhead tank or with a dedicated whole-house solution.

My shower pressure dropped after installing a filter. Is the filter bad?

Typically no, as a showerhead's internal flow restrictor washer is typically placed on top of the of a new filter, which requires that flow be restricted two times. To fix this, remove the small rubber flow restrictor (not the main sealing washer) from inside the showerhead. If the pressure is still not recovered, and the transparent housing part has darkened, then the cartridge is at its end of life.

Why is my filter leaking only at the top joint?

Usually, this happens because of Teflon tape issues - i.e., Teflon tape was either put on the wrong way (counter clockwise), too few turns have been used (less than 3 turns for the tape is not enough), or the shower arm thread has burrs or scale on the male or female threads.

To fix this problem, you must remove any old tape, clean and dry both threads, wrap the new tape around each of the male and female threads using 5 evenly spaced clockwise turns of the new Teflon tape, and reassemble the related parts to be hand-tight plus 1/4 turn.

My filter water is brown. What's going wrong?

There are three possibilities: (1) The cartridge has blocked and expelled particles of iron; this requires that the cartridge be replaced; (2) that the cartridge was installed incorrectly, with the arrow facing up; this requires reversal of the cartridge; (3) That the feed water had excessive iron content to start off with. Therefore, the cartridge will have exhausted itself prematurely; therefore it should be replaced and you might want to consider the borewell cartridge variant for the next replacement.

How long should a new cartridge last before any of these problems appear?

With typical Indian municipal water a Care Dale cartridge will last between five and six months before showing any end-of-life symptoms (cloudy discharge, return of chlorine smell, slow flow rate). The same cartridge will last between three and four months when used for borewell water with TDS levels above 1,000 mg/L. The transparent cartridge housing allows for the easy viewing of the cartridge replacement interval instead of relying on guess work.
