What Is Hard Water? Causes, Composition & Indian Water Standards

A white crust at the base of your kettle is a sign that your tap water is hard. So is shampoo that no longer lathers the way it did when you first opened the bottle.

Hard water is one of the most common water-quality issues in Indian homes. It hurts the lifespan of your geyser. It changes how every bath product behaves on your hair and skin.

The material has three key sections: What hard water is; details on how to measure hard water; and a description of the Indian definition of hard water. There will be no mention or discussion of the effects of hard water on hair and skin; those items have their own separate guides. The guide will also provide instructions for testing your own home supply for TDS, the safety of TDS when applying shampoo to your hair, and where in your building to find the "worst" water source. Each section of the guide will have its own separate guide.

What is hard water, in one sentence?

Hard water is water with high concentrations of dissolved calcium and magnesium. It is clear, tasteless at typical Indian tap levels, and safe to drink.

But it is not chemically neutral. Once dissolved, calcium and magnesium react with soap, skin, metal, and heat. At high enough concentrations, that reaction shows up as limescale, soap scum, dull hair, and chalky residue on every surface the water touches. Every classic hard-water symptom traces back to these two ions.

What makes water "hard"? The two ions that matter

Hard water gets its hardness from calcium and magnesium ions dissolved out of the ground. Any divalent metal ion contributes, but calcium and magnesium account for over 95% of total hardness in Indian water.

The minerals enter water as it flows through limestone, chalk, dolomite, and gypsum. The more of those rocks the water touches, the harder it gets. That is why borewell water in Bangalore and Hyderabad, sitting on hard-rock geology, is much harder than river-fed Cauvery or Yamuna supply.

How does water actually become hard? A short geology lesson

Rainwater starts out pure. On its way down it picks up CO₂ from the air and turns into a weak carbonic acid.

That mild acid is what dissolves the rock. As the water seeps through soil and limestone on its way to a borewell or aquifer, calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and magnesium carbonate (MgCO₃) leach into it. By the time the water reaches the well, it is mineralised.

Water can dissolve rock minerals when it is in contact with them for a long enough time. Deep bore wells generally have higher levels of dissolved minerals in their water than shallow bore wells do. Municipal surface water sources tend to have variable amounts of dissolved minerals present because they do not have enough time in contact with the ground before reaching the end-user. This will be addressed further in our analysis of different water sources Indian homes depend on.

Temporary vs permanent hardness - and why it matters

There exist two varieties of chemical property, that are both termed hardness, and each behaves in a distinctly different manner from one another. The presence of calcium and magnesium bicarbonates in water, known as temporary hardness, gives rise to the temporary nature of this type of hardness; therefore, it can be removed to some extent by heating. When heated, calcium and magnesium bicarbonate will decompose into calcium and magnesium carbonate (which are not soluble in water). Due to the formation of "white" scale, the inside surfaces of the kettle will be coated with an insoluble solid.

Water that has permanent hardness has BOTH calcium and magnesium chlorides and sulfates present in it. Boiling water will not breakdown these compounds, so they will always remain in the water regardless of boiling or heating methods. To reduce or remove the permanent hardness from water you would need to use either an ion-exchange softener system, reverse osmosis, or another type of specialized media.

Because most borewell waters in India contain both types of hardness the result is that kettles will develop scale buildup which means that there is also a demand for quality treatment systems to soften water.

How is hardness measured? ppm, mg/L, GPG, and grains explained

There are many means of measuring hardness in water and each of these methods can be confusing as they are simply different ways of measuring the same thing. In India the standard method of measurement used is milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate equivalent (mg/L as CaCO₃) which is also equivalent to parts per million (ppm). Thus when you convert from one to the other, e.g. convert 1mg/L to 1ppm, there is no difference at all.

In the United States and on imported filter packaging, hardness is often reported in grains per gallon (GPG). The conversion is fixed: 1 GPG = 17.118 mg/L (ppm). A US filter rated for "10 GPG hard water" is rated for roughly 171 mg/L - barely scratching the surface of what most Indian borewells deliver. This unit mismatch is one reason imported showerheads marketed as "hard water" filters often underperform here.

A pen-style Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) meter, such as the ones available on Amazon, provides two different types of TDS readings/measurements, however neither are actually TDS measurements. Total Dissolved Solids are all of the Solids that are Dissolved in the ground water (the solids that are Dissolved include such solids as Sodium, Potassium, Sulfate and Chlorine.) Generally a High TDS will also have a correspondingly greater amount of Hardness; however, the two results are not measuring the same thing.

India's official limit: BIS IS 10500:2012

In IS 10500:2012 (Indian Standard), India's Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation has established wholesome drinking water quality standards that include two maximum permissible levels found in Indian water supplies for the total hardness of drinking water (measured in terms​ofCaCO3).

If your water tests above 200 mg/L, it should not be your only drinking source. That is the BIS acceptable limit.

The 600 mg/L permissible limit exists for areas where no softer alternative is available. It is a ceiling on the worst case, not a recommendation. Many hard-water Indian cities on Deccan-plateau geology routinely test between 300–600 mg/L.

How India compares globally

The USGS has become very well-known for classifying hardness by using different categories based upon mg/L of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) as a measurement to classify each type of hardness.

By the USGS scale, every drop of water classified as "moderately hard" in the US would already exceed the soft band, and most Indian borewell water - at 300 mg/L and up - sits firmly in very hard territory. The World Health Organization has stated there is no convincing evidence that water hardness causes adverse health effects from drinking, which is why no health-based WHO guideline value exists for it. The damage hard water does in Indian bathrooms is not a drinking-water problem. It is a contact-with-skin-and-hair problem.

Where does India's hard water actually come from?

Roughly two-thirds of India sits on hard-rock geology — granite, basalt, gneiss — naturally rich in calcium and magnesium.

Add a few more things on top. Two decades of falling groundwater tables push borewells deeper into more mineralised layers. Patchy municipal supply pushes households onto borewells and tankers. Seasonal mixing of soft surface water with hard groundwater shifts what comes out of the tap. The result is the patchwork of hardness Indian families deal with.

Hard water can differ considerably in quality between apartments getting water from Cauvery, villas from boreholes, and PGs through water truck deliveries. They can all reside on the same block! neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood variation across Bangalore is your best example.

Is hard water harmful?

For drinking, no. Calcium and magnesium at Indian tap-water levels are safe and even contribute marginally to daily mineral intake.

The real cost shows up on every surface water touches. Hard water creates soap scum, which is why your shampoo barely lathers. It deposits scale in geysers, washing machines, and dishwashers, which is why appliances die earlier in Bangalore than in Chennai.

On hair and skin, calcium ions bind to keratin and to skincare actives, leaving a residue no conditioner can rinse off. That is the gap a tap-and-shower filter closes — letting you drink, bathe, and wash without the hardness reaching you.

FAQ

Is hard water the same as TDS? No. TDS measures the total amount of dissolved solids in water - calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chlorides, sulphates and more. Hardness specifically measures calcium and magnesium, reported as mg/L of CaCO₃. A water can have moderately high TDS but low hardness if most of the dissolved solids are sodium salts.

What's the difference between hardness in ppm and GPG? Both measure the same thing in different units. 1 grain per gallon (GPG) equals 17.118 milligrams per litre (mg/L or ppm). A filter rated for 25 GPG is rated for roughly 428 mg/L - still below the worst Indian borewell water.

Is it safe to drink hard water every day? At levels below the BIS permissible limit of 600 mg/L, hard water is considered safe to drink. The WHO has stated there is no convincing evidence linking hardness to adverse health effects. The bigger problems are scale on appliances, dull skin, and dry hair - not toxicity.

What is soft water exactly? By the USGS scale, soft water is water with less than 60 mg/L of total hardness as CaCO₃. Rainwater, distilled water and reverse-osmosis output are all naturally soft. Most Indian municipal supplies sit well above this, and most borewell supplies sit at four to ten times this number.

Can I make hard water soft by just boiling it? Partially. Boiling removes temporary hardness - the bicarbonates - by precipitating them out as scale. It does nothing to permanent hardness caused by sulphates and chlorides. Most Indian borewell water has both, which is why boiled water still leaves residue on your skin after a bath.

Why does my soap not lather even though my water looks clean? Hard water reacts with soap molecules to form an insoluble curd called soap scum. The reaction consumes the soap before it has a chance to lather. Clear water tells you nothing about hardness - calcium and magnesium ions are invisible at every concentration found in Indian taps.
