Is Tap Water Bad for Skin and Hair? What Indian Taps Carry by City

Last updated: 8 October 2026

Quick Answer: Is tap water bad for skin? Usually not by itself, but two things in Indian tap water can dry or irritate it: hardness, which leaves more cleanser on skin (BIS sets 200 mg/L as acceptable), and chlorine, which eczema-prone skin tolerated less well from 0.5 mg/L in hot water. Test before blaming it.

Whether tap water is bad for your skin and hair depends on what is in it, and in India that changes from city to city and even street to street. A lake-fed supply, a Cauvery pipeline and a deep borewell deliver very different water to the same kind of bathroom.

This guide lists what Indian tap water can contain, what each part does to skin and hair, what five big cities' water looks like in published tests, how to test your own tap and which symptom points to which cause.

What is in Indian tap water, and what does each part do to skin?

Indian tap water is judged against BIS IS 10500:2012, the drinking-water standard. Hardness, chlorine and sediment are the three a shower filter deals with at every wash; most of the rest matter mainly for drinking and need treatment upstream.

What is in the water BIS limit (acceptable / permissible) What it does to skin or hair Does a shower filter address it?
Hardness (calcium, magnesium) 200 / 600 mg/L as CaCO₃ Leaves more cleanser on skin and a film on hair Yes, reduces it
Free chlorine At least 0.2 at the tap; 1 mg/L permissible Eczema-prone skin held less water from 0.5 mg/L in hot water Yes, reduces it
Sediment (sand, silt, grit) Turbidity 1 / 5 NTU Grit on skin and hair; clogged shower nozzles Yes, reduces physical particles
Chloramines 4 mg/L A longer-lasting disinfectant some supplies use No
Iron 1.0 mg/L in the limit labs apply today (the 2012 text said 0.3) Orange-brown staining of buckets, tiles and laundry No; needs treatment upstream
Total dissolved solids (TDS) 500 / 2,000 mg/L A total of everything dissolved, not a skin measure on its own No
Fluoride 1.0 / 1.5 mg/L A drinking-water risk: fluorosis at high levels No
Nitrate 45 mg/L A drinking-water risk for infants No
Arsenic 0.01 mg/L CGWB lists skin diseases and cancer risk No
Lead 0.01 mg/L Toxic in acute and chronic exposure No
Bacteria (coliform, E. coli) None detectable in 100 mL Waterborne disease, and infections of the skin, eyes, ears and throat No
pH 6.5 to 8.5 Water near pH 8 raises skin pH for hours Not something a shower filter is sold to change

Read the last column carefully: a point-of-use shower filter does not address lead, arsenic, nitrate, fluoride, bacteria, iron or TDS, and does not make water drinkable. Those need a tested drinking-water solution or treatment at the source; the health notes in the table follow CGWB's table of drinking-water effects.

How does hard water affect skin?

Hard water leaves more soap and cleanser on skin. In a 2018 study of 80 people, hard water left about 2.8 times as much detergent residue as deionised water, which raised water loss through the skin and irritation, most in people with eczema carrying filaggrin gene mutations.

Population studies point the same way: a UK Biobank analysis of 306,531 adults linked water above 200 mg/L with higher odds of having eczema, though not with new cases. These are associations, and softening is not a treatment: in the SWET trial, a water softener added to usual care gave 336 children with moderate or severe eczema no additional benefit.

Chlorine is a separate question with a different answer, covered in our guide to what chlorinated tap water does to the skin barrier.

Is tap water bad for your hair?

Hard tap water can leave hair feeling coated and rough, and one of two lab studies found it weakened hair, but neither measured hair fall. IIT Kanpur notes that hard water needs more soap and can leave a film on hair, fabrics and glassware, which is the dullness people notice.

On strength the studies disagree. Srinivasan and colleagues soaked hair from 15 women in 212.5 mg/L water or distilled water for 10 minutes on alternate days for 30 days and found no significant difference in tensile strength (P = 0.858) or elasticity (P = 0.874). Luqman and colleagues used hair from 70 men and 486.7 mg/L water for 3 months and found it about 8% weaker than untreated hair (234.16 vs 255.49, P = 0.001).

Both appeared in the International Journal of Trichology, in 2013 and 2018. For hair fall itself, see our guide to whether hard water causes hair fall; for flakes on the scalp, read about hard water and dandruff.

What comes out of your tap, city by city?

Big-city supplies differ more than people expect. In a 2019 BIS test of piped water at the consumer's tap, every Mumbai sample met all 44 parameters tested and nine of ten Hyderabad samples did, while every Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai sample failed at least one. Groundwater adds a second layer of variation.

City Main sources What published tests show What it means for skin and hair
Delhi Treatment plants including the Yamuna-fed Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla, plus borewell water in parts of the city BIS 2019: all 11 samples failed at least one parameter, 9 on coliform, 4 on total hardness, 3 on iron. CPCB, Janakpuri, 2025: free chlorine undetectable to 0.96 mg/L. South West Delhi groundwater hardness: 120 to 4,310 mg/L (2018 study) Borewell homes can be very hard; piped supply varies by colony, so test both hardness and chlorine
Mumbai Seven lakes, treated at Bhandup and Panjrapur (Citizen Matters) BIS 2019: all 10 samples met all 44 parameters Lake-fed supply, usually softer than groundwater; chlorine is the part to watch
Bengaluru Cauvery water piped by BWSSB, plus borewells and tankers (Citizen Matters) BIS 2019: all 10 failed at least one parameter, mostly turbidity and aluminium, 4 on coliform, none on total hardness. CGWB: groundwater hardness 100 to 600 mg/L, pH 7.8 to 8.5 Cauvery taps and borewell taps can differ widely in one neighbourhood
Chennai Lakes, Veeranam, well fields and desalination plants at Minjur and Nemmeli (CMWSSB) BIS 2019: all 10 failed at least one parameter, 6 on fluoride, 6 on TDS, 2 on total hardness, 2 on coliform Mixed sources; test TDS and hardness rather than assuming
Hyderabad Krishna, Godavari and Manjira rivers plus Singur, Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar (Indian Infrastructure) BIS 2019: 9 of 10 met all 44 parameters. CGWB 2022-23: no Hyderabad district groundwater sample above 600 mg/L hardness; 4 of 23 above 1.5 mg/L fluoride Piped supply did well; borewell homes should test hardness

Read this as a snapshot, not a verdict on your street. BIS drew 10 or 11 samples per city in one round, and the Delhi Jal Board retested nine of the Delhi sites and said eight were fit to drink. Delhi's plants also cut production when the Yamuna carries more ammonia than they can treat: in January 2022, it reached 5 ppm against the 0.9 ppm the Delhi Jal Board said it could handle.

Why is borewell and iron-rich water a separate problem?

Borewell water often sits for months in rock, so it usually carries more dissolved minerals than lake or river supply, and in some areas it carries iron. CGWB notes that iron gives water a bitter, astringent taste and stains laundry and porcelain; it is the orange-brown ring in a white bucket left standing.

Iron is not something a shower filter fixes. Its known effects are on taste and staining, and on hair a 1989 German case report described brown discolouration of fair hair and nails in a woman who washed with iron-rich water. If your bucket stains orange, get a lab test that includes iron and treat it upstream.

Borewell water also shifts through the year. CGWB's Hyderabad readings averaged 268 mg/L of hardness before the monsoon against 252 mg/L after it, so test in more than one season, as our guide to how hardness changes by season explains.

How do you test your tap water at home?

You can check the things that matter for skin and hair in one sitting, with a few inexpensive tools and two free checks. Test the bathroom outlet you actually use, not the kitchen purifier line.

  • Lather test (free): shake a few drops of liquid soap with tap water in a bottle; little foam and a cloudy film mean hard water.
  • Hardness test kit: about ₹900 to ₹1,000 for a lab-grade kit, giving total hardness in mg/L as CaCO₃.
  • Free-chlorine drop kit: about ₹790 to ₹1,430 for a lab-grade kit; read it against the BIS 0.2 to 1 mg/L range.
  • TDS pen: typically ₹170 to ₹300 for a basic pen; about ₹600 or more with temperature compensation. It measures everything dissolved, not hardness.
  • White-bucket check (free): leave a white bucket of water overnight; an orange-brown ring points to iron, and sand at the bottom to sediment.

pH strips or paper give a rough reading if you want one. For a full picture, a lab costs typically ₹600 to ₹1,000 for a basic panel: the Jal Jeevan Mission framework set ₹600 for all 16 parameters at public labs, and CSIR-CMERI lists a basic panel at ₹850 plus GST. Our guide on where to get water tested in India lists the options.

Which symptom points to which cause?

Match what you notice to the most likely cause, then confirm it with the matching test. Several causes often overlap in one home, and none of these checks replaces a doctor for a rash that keeps coming back.

What you notice Most likely cause Check
Skin tight and filmy straight after washing; soap barely lathers Hardness Lather test or hardness kit
Itch or sting soon after a hot shower, with a chlorine smell Chlorine plus heat Free-chlorine kit at the shower outlet
Orange-brown stains on buckets, tiles or light-coloured hair Iron White-bucket check, then a lab test for iron
Grit in the bucket, clogged nozzles Sediment Let a bucket settle; see our guide to sediment in bathing water
Dryness that worsens in the hot months on borewell supply Borewell hardness rising before the monsoon Test hardness before and after the monsoon
A weeping, crusted or spreading rash Not something water tests can answer See a doctor

Does skin pH explain why tap water feels harsh?

Partly. Healthy skin is slightly acidic: a 2006 study of 330 people put natural skin surface pH at about 4.7, and skin below pH 5 had better barrier function and moisture than skin above it. The same study found that plain tap water at around pH 8 raises skin pH for up to six hours.

BIS allows Indian tap water a pH of 6.5 to 8.5, and CGWB recorded 7.8 to 8.5 in Bengaluru's groundwater. So every wash nudges skin away from its acidic surface for a while, which is why a gentle cleanser and a moisturiser after washing help.

When should you see a dermatologist, and what should you bring?

See a doctor if a rash keeps coming back, does not settle when you change your routine, or spreads. The NHS atopic eczema guidance asks for urgent help if skin is blistered, crusty, leaking or has pus-filled spots, is painful, swollen or warm, or comes with a high temperature, and for any eczema-like rash in a child.

A private dermatologist consultation in India costs typically ₹500 to ₹1,500. Take your hardness and chlorine readings, your water source (piped, borewell or tanker), the products you use and photos of flares. A dermatologist decides the treatment; water changes only lower everyday irritants.

Where does a shower filter fit?

If your tests show hard or chlorinated water, a point-of-use filter handles the part that touches skin and hair. Care Dale's dermatologist-certified, clinically tested tap and shower filter for municipal water (₹1,499) reduces hardness minerals, chlorine and sediment where water leaves the tap, and a ₹1,899 model is built for borewell and tanker water.

The Care Dale filter is not a purification system, so it does not reduce total dissolved solids (TDS), nor does it remove iron or heavy metals. No shower filter, Care Dale included, addresses iron, heavy metals, chloramine, TDS or bacteria.

FAQ

Does a shower filter make tap water safe to drink? No. A tap or shower filter reduces hardness minerals, chlorine and sediment at the outlet, but it does not lower TDS or remove iron, heavy metals, chloramine or bacteria, and it is not a purifier. Drinking water needs a purifier chosen for your test results.

What TDS reading is too high for washing? BIS sets TDS limits for drinking water, 500 mg/L acceptable and 2,000 mg/L permissible, not for bathing. A TDS pen cannot separate hardness from harmless salts, so pair any high reading with a hardness test before deciding anything.

Why does my tap smell of chlorine on some days and not others? Free chlorine fades as water stands in tanks and pipes, so the level depends on how long the water sat before reaching you. In one Delhi block, taps ranged from undetectable to 0.96 mg/L. A test kit tells you the actual level.

How often should I test my tap water? Test once when you move in, then before and after the monsoon if you use borewell or tanker water, because groundwater hardness shifts with the seasons. Retest whenever your supply changes, such as a new borewell or a switch to tanker water.

Does a kitchen water purifier protect my skin too? No. A kitchen purifier treats only the water that passes through it, so the bathroom taps still deliver untreated supply. Test the bathroom outlet separately, because that is the water your skin and hair meet every day.
