Soak it in white vinegar. One to four hours in undiluted white vinegar dissolves the chalky deposit blocking the nozzles, and in most Indian bathrooms that deposit is the entire problem.

The blockage is limescale, not a plumbing fault. Calcium and magnesium come out of solution as water sits and evaporates in the nozzle holes, and each shower leaves a little more behind.

Why does a showerhead block up in the first place?

Because hard water leaves its minerals behind every time it evaporates. Each nozzle holds a droplet after you turn the shower off, that droplet dries, and the calcium in it stays as a white crust.

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, and Indian supply carries plenty of it. BIS IS 10500:2012 sets an acceptable total hardness of 200 mg/L and a permissible ceiling of 600 mg/L.

The classification helps you place your own water. The Maryland Geological Survey puts water above 180 mg/L in the very hard band, with 61 to 120 mg/L counted as moderately hard.

Indian groundwater routinely runs past all of that. A 2025 study of 60 samples in southern Tamil Nadu recorded total hardness reaching 5,260 mg/L after the monsoon, and readings move with the season.

Heat makes it worse, which is why the shower scales faster than the basin tap. Calcium carbonate becomes less soluble as water warms, and building services guidance notes that precipitation starts at roughly 35C to 40C in hot water systems.

How do you clean a blocked showerhead?

Remove it, place it in white vinegar, and let it be. Acetic acid acts on calcium carbonate and degrades the build-up into materials that you can simply wash off.

  1. Unscrew the head from the shower arm by hand. If it resists, grip it with a cloth and turn anticlockwise. Do not use pliers directly on chrome.
  2. Submerge it fully in a bowl of undiluted white vinegar, nozzle face down. Cheap distilled vinegar works as well as anything sold as a descaler.
  3. Leave it one to four hours. Light film needs an hour. A head that has never been cleaned needs the full four, and sometimes overnight.
  4. Scrub the nozzle face with an old toothbrush. The softened scale lifts off as white grit.
  5. Push each blocked nozzle with a toothpick or straightened pin. Most people skip this, and it is what restores the spray pattern.
  6. Rinse thoroughly, refit, and run hot water for a minute to flush loosened debris out.

Can you clean it without taking it off?

Yes, and it is the better option on a fixed overhead rain shower. Fill a strong plastic bag with vinegar, raise it over the head until the nozzle face is submerged, and tie it in place with a rubber band or a hair tie.

Leave it the same one to four hours, then remove the bag and scrub. The only real difference is that you cannot flush the inside of the head, so plan on doing this slightly more often.

A litre of vinegar is heavy, so check the knot before walking away.

What if vinegar is not an option?

Citric acid does the same job and is worth having if the vinegar smell bothers you. Dissolve two tablespoons of food-grade citric acid in a litre of warm water and soak exactly as above.

Baking soda is the one that disappoints. It is mildly alkaline, so it does nothing to carbonate scale, and mixing it with vinegar simply neutralises the acid you needed. Use one or the other, never both.

How often should you descale a showerhead?

Every two to three months in most Indian metros, and monthly if you are on borewell or tanker supply. The honest test is the spray itself rather than the calendar.

If you are unsure whether hardness is really the problem, then check the soap test and strips on testing hard water at home and also refer to the visible signs across hair, skin and bathroom for additional issues to check.

What actually stops the scale coming back?

Nothing you do to the showerhead. Descaling removes what has already formed, and the next wash starts depositing again, because the mineral load in the water has not changed.

The only way to slow the rebuild is to treat the water before it reaches the nozzles. A filter fitted between the shower arm and the head reduces the hardness in every litre that passes through, so less calcium arrives to precipitate.

That same water is what your hair and skin meet. Hardness has a measured cosmetic effect: a trichology study found hair treated at 486.7 mg/L for three months lost measurable tensile strength against both a control group and deionised water.

Be clear about the limits. The Care Dale filter is not a purification system, so it does not reduce total dissolved solids (TDS), nor does it separate out iron or heavy metals. What four weeks usually look like

Week one is the descale itself. The spray pattern comes back the same day, and that is the fastest visible result in this whole article.

By weeks two and three, a filtered shower means noticeably less new crust forming around the nozzles. You are not watching scale disappear, you are watching it stop accumulating at the old rate.

By week four the nozzle face still looks clean, which in an untreated hard-water bathroom it usually would not. Skin tends to feel less tight too, helped further by the short warm showers dermatology guidance recommends.

The geyser is different. It sits upstream and will scale anyway, thus reducing hard water damage across the rest of the house uses another strategy.
