Hard Water Geyser Scaling and Cost in India

Last updated: 21 August 2026.
Heat is what turns dissolved calcium into a solid, so a geyser scales faster than any other fitting in the house. The deposit lands on the heating element, insulates it, and the unit compensates by running longer.
You bear that cost two times; once every day in electricity and the other when a part that has been in violation for two years eventually breaks down.
The filters of Care Dale are dermatologist-certified, clinically tested, while they both sit at the tap and shower respectively. Meanwhile, the geyser is located upstream of both, determining the functions of all this.
Why does heating water create scale?
Temperature determines that remains dissolved. Calcium bicarbonate is stable in cold water and decomposes when heated, leading to insoluble calcium carbonate formation.
The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) sets out the reaction plainly, noting that heating breaks calcium bicarbonate into calcium carbonate, water and carbon dioxide, and that the insoluble calcium carbonate is the principal component of what is known as limescale.
The threshold is lower than most people expect. The same source puts practical precipitation at approximately 35C to 40C, worsening as temperatures rise, which is below the setting on almost every domestic geyser in India.
This method of behavior applies only to some forms of water hardness. Temporary hardness is produced by bicarbohydrate salts dissolving upon heat treatment. Permanent hardness comes from sulfates and chlorides and cannot be affected by heat.
How much scale should you expect?
It measures your supply hardness and your thermostat setting. Both devices are not readily visible from outside the tank. For this reason, the first symptom noticed by most people is usually a bill and not a fault.
| Supply hardness | Band | Practical descaling interval |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 60 mg/L | Soft | Rarely needed |
| 61 to 120 mg/L | Moderately hard | Every 2 to 3 years |
| 121 to 180 mg/L | Hard | Annually |
| Above 180 mg/L | Very hard | Annually, sometimes sooner |
The bands are the Maryland Geological Survey classification. The intervals are a practical read of them, not a manufacturer specification, so treat your own service manual as the authority if the two disagree.
Indian supply frequently sits in the bottom row. IS 10500:2012 permits total hardness up to 600 mg/L at its permissible maximum, and a 2025 survey of one southern Tamil Nadu block found hardness above the standard in roughly half of its samples.
Turning the thermostat down helps more than most interventions. Every degree below the precipitation threshold slows the deposit.
What does scale actually cost you?
Efficiency first, then hardware. Calcium carbonate is a poor conductor, so a coated element transfers less of its heat into the water and more into itself.
CIBSE describes the consequence directly: scale on heating surfaces reduces heat transfer, fuel consumption can increase, and the unit can deteriorate through overheating of the heat exchanger.
In home installations of geyser, the order is predictable. First you have a long heating session followed by water which fails to reach the set temperature completely. Finally, the element trips.
There is a safety dimension too. The UK Health and Safety Executive, cited in the same module, treats scale reduction as important both for efficiency and because deposits offer nutrients and shelter for bacteria in stored hot water.
How do you deal with a scaled geyser?
Get a professional. This task on this page is the only one that is not a household chore, and practical considerations are behind it rather than pure caution.
A storage geyser has to be isolated, drained, opened, and the element and anode inspected before any descaling agent goes near it. Doing that wrong floods a bathroom or damages the tank lining.
What you can usefully do:
- Schedule your services every year. Do not wait for a breakdown to get your service done.
- Request to see the element. If you notice a lot of crust on your element, you are probably waiting too long between services.
- Inquire about the sacrificial anode. It serves the purpose of preventing corrosion. In hard water, it may require replacement.
- Set the thermostat at the lowest comfortable temperature.
- Keep a record of the date. The service intervals get longer when no one remembers when the last service took place.
Do not pour descaler into the inlet and hope. Concentration and dwell time are controlled for a reason, and an unmonitored acid soak damages seals.
What to avoid
Four things make a scaled geyser worse, and three of them are attempts to fix it.
- Running the thermostat at maximum to compensate for slow heating. It accelerates precipitation at exactly the surface you are trying to protect.
- Home acid flushes through the inlet. Without isolation and a controlled dwell time this attacks seals and the tank lining alongside the scale.
- Ignoring the anode. A sacrificial anode corrodes so the tank does not, and in hard water it depletes faster. Replacing it is cheap; replacing a tank is not.
- Fitting a bathroom filter to solve it. This is the most common and the most expensive misunderstanding, and the plumbing section below explains why.
A magnetic or electronic conditioner clamped to the inlet pipe is a separate question. These change how crystals form rather than removing calcium, and independent evidence for domestic units is mixed enough that it is worth understanding what you are measuring before spending on one.
Why a shower filter cannot protect a geyser
This is the point that saves people money, so it deserves its own heading rather than a footnote.
Water flows from the mains, into the geyser, and only then to your shower or tap. A filter fitted at the outlet is downstream of the tank, so the water it treats has already been heated and has already deposited its scale inside the unit.
No point-of-use filter changes that sequence. Care Dale's runs three layers, pre-filtration for sediment, CareTec ultrafiltration for hardness, then a chlorine and impurities stage, and every one of them acts on water that has left the geyser.
The Care Dale filter is not a purification system, so it does not reduce total dissolved solids, nor does it separate out iron or heavy metals. No shower filter, Care Dale included, addresses iron, heavy metals, chloramine, TDS or bacteria.
What it does treat is the water that reaches your hair and skin, which is a different problem worth solving on its own terms. The mechanism there is documented: hard water reacts with soap to form an insoluble residue, and research on that residue found it aggravates skin conditions in patients with atopic dermatitis.
A UK Biobank analysis of 306,531 adults found higher odds of eczema where domestic water exceeded 200 mg/L of calcium carbonate, though it recorded no link with new-onset cases. You can match a filter to your supply type at ₹1,499 for municipal water, or ₹1,899 for the borewell and tanker version.
The role of protecting the appliances lies with the inlet side. a plumbed softener against point-of-use filtration is the honest comparison, and both things are different.
What four weeks usually look like
Week one is measurement. You establish whether your water is genuinely hard and note your thermostat setting, because both inputs decide everything that follows.
Week two is the cheap change. Drop the thermostat a few degrees and see whether hot water still meets the household's needs, which it usually does.
Weeks three and four are for the service booking and a realistic view of what treatment costs if the technician reports heavy scale.
The practical equation leads to a build process that is slower than usual, one which depends on a known service frequency, with accumulated scale removed during service.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my geyser has scale inside? The usual signs are longer heating times, water that stops reaching its old temperature, and a rumbling or popping sound as trapped steam escapes from under the deposit. None of these are visible without opening the unit, so a service inspection confirms it.
Does a tankless or instant geyser scale too? Yes, and sometimes faster in proportion to its size, because the heat exchanger has narrow passages that a small deposit restricts significantly. Many instant units specify a descaling flush at intervals set by supply hardness rather than by time alone.
Will lowering the temperature stop scale completely? No, it slows the rate rather than stopping it. Precipitation begins around 35C to 40C and most households need water warmer than that, so the realistic aim is the lowest comfortable setting rather than avoiding the threshold, which is not practical.
Is scale in a geyser a health risk? The deposit itself is calcium carbonate and is not hazardous. The concern in stored hot water is that scale provides surface area and nutrients where bacteria can shelter, which is why service guidance treats scale control as a hygiene matter as well as an efficiency one.
Does an RO purifier protect my geyser? Only if it is plumbed to feed the geyser, which is almost never how a domestic unit is installed. A kitchen purifier treats drinking water at a single tap and has no connection to the hot water line that supplies your bathroom, so it offers the tank no protection at all.
