Chalky white limescale encrusting a chrome bathroom tap beside a bowl of white vinegar

What Is Limescale and How Do You Remove It?

Last updated: 21 August 2026.

Limescale is calcium carbonate, the chalky white crust hard water leaves when it dries on a surface or gets heated. Acid removes it.

That is why vinegar works and scrubbing does not. Abrasives grind the deposit down and scratch the chrome underneath.

It also explains why it returns. The crust is a symptom of the water, so cleaning is maintenance rather than a cure.

Heat is the ignitor, thus the hot tap builds up coating first. The filter of Care Dale is dermatologist-certified, clinically tested, with its maximum limits being worth pointing out.

Why does hard water leave a solid behind?

When calcium carbonate decreases solubility. Water with high concentrations of calcium and magnesium evaporates, a solid cap of calcium begins to accumulate.

The chemistry is well documented. The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) notes, in its technical module on hot water systems, that heating breaks calcium bicarbonate down into calcium carbonate, water and carbon dioxide, and that the insoluble calcium carbonate is the principal component of what is known as limescale.

Two kinds of hardness behave differently. Temporary hardness, from bicarbonate salts, drops out on heating. Permanent hardness, from sulphates and chlorides, does not. Both dissolve in acid.

How much you get depends on your supply. Place your water on the standard scale first.

Hardness (as CaCO3) Band Scale you will see
0 to 60 mg/L Soft Little to none
61 to 120 mg/L Moderately hard Light spotting on glass
121 to 180 mg/L Hard Visible crust on spouts within weeks
Above 180 mg/L Very hard Persistent build on every wet surface

The bands are the Maryland Geological Survey classification. India's own limits sit separately: IS 10500:2012 sets total hardness at 200 mg/L acceptable and 600 mg/L maximum, so compliant water can still be very hard.

A 2025 survey of a southern Tamil Nadu block found total hardness above the standard in 48 percent of pre-monsoon samples. That is the band most Indian hard water falls into.

Where does limescale build up fastest in a bathroom?

Wherever water sits or gets hot. The Maryland Geological Survey notes that white scale often forms on plumbing fixtures and in shower stalls.

This reaction is seen on skin. A study involving metallic soap discovered that aggravates skin conditions in patients with atopic dermatitis. The UK Biobank study of 306,531 adults revealed that higher eczema odds above 200 mg/L of calcium carbonate.

In practice, four places go first.

  • Tap spouts and aerators, where a droplet always stays behind.
  • Shower glass, where the film dries after every wash.
  • Tiles and grout in the splash zone.
  • The geyser, internally and unseen.

Heat is the accelerant. CIBSE puts practical precipitation of calcium carbonate at approximately 35C to 40C, worsening as temperatures rise, which is why the hot tap furs up faster than the cold one.

If you are not sure whether hardness is your problem at all, it is worth checking whether your water is hard before you start cleaning.

How do you remove limescale from taps and fittings?

Let soak, avoid scrubbing. Pure white vinegar breaks down calcium carbonate making contact time the only variable. A neglected faucet will need overnight; while a light coating takes an hour.

  1. Use a bag containing vinegar to cover the faucet, keeping the deposit submerged. Wrap the bag around the faucet and clean it.
  2. If the aerator can be unscrewed, drop it into a glass of vinegar.
  3. To remove debris from the screen, you can use a pin instead of flushing it.
  4. If you would rather use citric acid, you could mix around two teaspoons with hot water, which is relatively equally effective as vinegar.
  5. After cleaning the fitting you should dry it as wet surfaces cause deposits to form more quickly.

The same soak logic applies to a blocked spray, which is a job worth doing properly on the showerhead itself.

How do you remove hard water stains from glass?

Acid and dwell time again. Shower glass holds a mineral film that builds in layers, so one wipe rarely clears it and the temptation is an abrasive.

Soak a cloth in white vinegar, lay it flat against the glass and leave it fifteen to twenty minutes so the acid stays in contact. Wipe with a non-scratch pad, then rinse.

For older marks, use a citric acid paste and give it half an hour. Repeat rather than escalating to an abrasive.

Tiles and grout take the same treatment, though grout needs a soft brush. Test acid on one tile first if the surface is stone.

Then squeegee the glass after each shower. It sounds trivial and it is the most effective habit here, because the film cannot form if water never dries.

What does limescale do to a geyser?

It costs efficiency, quietly. Scale settles on the heating surfaces inside the tank, and because it insulates rather than conducts, the element works longer.

According to CIBSE: a deposit on heating surfaces can have a negative impact on the efficiency; it leads to an increase in energy consumption and overheating of the exchanger.

Attempting to clean it on your own is not recommended. Descaling tanks requires professional expertise. In locations with hard water, routine annual inspections are always better than waiting for a problem.

One honest point. A geyser sits upstream of your shower outlet, so a filter at the shower cannot protect it. That is plumbing, not a product shortcoming.

What to avoid

Four things make limescale worse, and three of them are attempts to remove it.

  • Bleach. It does nothing to calcium carbonate and is not a descaler.
  • Metal scourers on chrome. They scratch the plating, and scratches hold the next deposit more stubbornly than the original finish.
  • Acid on natural stone. Vinegar and citric acid etch marble and limestone permanently. Test one tile first.
  • Leaving surfaces wet. The deposit forms as water dries, so a squeegee removes the cause.

What actually slows limescale coming back?

Less hardness reaching the surface. Cleaning removes what is already there, and reducing what arrives is the only thing that changes the interval between cleans.

At the outlet, a tap and shower filter is the option. Care Dale's runs three layers, pre-filtration for sediment, CareTec ultrafiltration for hardness, then a chlorine and impurities stage, and it is built for the water your hair and skin actually meet. You can match a filter to your water source at ₹1,499 for municipal supply, or ₹1,899 for the borewell and tanker version.

Now the limits, because they matter more than the pitch. The Care Dale filter is not a purification system, so it does not reduce total dissolved solids, nor does it separate out iron or heavy metals. No shower filter, Care Dale included, addresses iron, heavy metals, chloramine, TDS or bacteria.

It also treats one outlet only, so it does nothing for your washing machine, kitchen tap or the geyser upstream.

For whole-house scale the answer is a plumbed softener, a different product for a different job. It is worth knowing which number you are actually measuring before buying either.

What four weeks usually look like

Week one is the reset. You strip the deposit from taps, glass and tiles, and the bathroom looks better than it has in months.

By week two the film returns if nothing changed upstream, and most conclude the cleaning failed. It did not. The water is still hard.

Weeks three and four are where reduced hardness and a squeegee show. Deposits form more slowly and lift with less effort.

The realistic outcome is a longer gap between cleans, not a bathroom that never scales.

Frequently asked questions

Is limescale harmful to health? No. The deposit is calcium carbonate, the same material as chalk, and the Maryland Geological Survey states plainly that hard water poses no health hazard. The problems it causes are practical rather than medical: scale on fittings, poor lather and dryness after washing.

Does vinegar actually remove limescale? Yes. Acetic acid reacts with calcium carbonate and breaks the deposit into compounds that rinse away easily. Contact time matters far more than concentration, so soaking for an hour beats scrubbing for ten minutes, and plain undiluted white vinegar performs as well as branded descalers.

Will limescale damage chrome or tiles permanently? Not if you remove it with acid rather than abrasives. The deposit sits on the surface, so vinegar or citric acid lifts it cleanly. Scouring pads and harsh powders scratch chrome and glaze, and those scratches then hold new deposits more stubbornly than the original finish did.

How often should you descale a bathroom? In a hard water area, taps and glass benefit from a monthly wipe with acid and a full soak every three months. Very hard supply may need it more often. The interval is set by how quickly you see the film return, not by a calendar.

Does a shower filter stop limescale? It reduces hardness in the water leaving that one outlet, so new deposits in that shower area form more slowly. It does not lower TDS or remove iron, heavy metals or bacteria, because it is filtration rather than purification, and it cannot protect a geyser sitting upstream of it.
