Is Indore water hard where you live?
It depends on whether your tap runs on the Narmada line or a bore. Most of the city gets municipal water from the Narmada river, pumped about 70 km to treatment plants, and that treated supply is moderate. Many localities, hostels and new developments rely mainly on borewells or tankers, where groundwater from the mineral-heavy Malwa plateau can exceed 800 ppm TDS.
| Area | Usual source | Reading in Care Dale's Indore guide | Filter to start with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kabir Khedi | Borewell groundwater | Hard, TDS around 829 ppm | Borewell/Tanker |
| Pologround | Borewell groundwater | Very hard, total hardness around 460 mg/L | Borewell/Tanker |
| Vijay Nagar, Bengali Square | Borewell plus municipal | Moderate to hard, varies by bore | Borewell/Tanker if the bore feeds your tank, otherwise Municipal |
| Sudama Nagar, Gandhi Nagar | Borewell plus municipal | Lower, TDS around 305 ppm at tested points | Municipal |
| Most Narmada-fed colonies | Treated Narmada supply | Moderate | Municipal |
The readings come from area sampling, so two buildings on one street can still differ. Read the full picture, including why a good locality name does not guarantee soft water, in Is Indore water hard?
Narmada line or borewell: which hard water filter in Indore do you need?
| Your supply | Filter | Price | Rated inlet water |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treated Narmada municipal water | Filter for Municipal Water, 4.97 from 515 reviews | ₹1,499 |
Built to handle inlet water up to about 800 ppm TDS |
| Borewell, tanker or a blend | Filter for Borewell/Tanker Water, 4.95 from 295 reviews | ₹1,899 |
Built to handle inlet water up to about 1,800 ppm TDS |
A pocket like Kabir Khedi, where the guide records about 829 ppm, already sits above the Municipal model's rating, so the Borewell/Tanker model is the safer pick there. Its cartridge carries an extra hardness layer on top of the sediment, CareTec mesh and chlorine layers. Still unsure? Our guide to which filter suits your water type settles it in a few questions.
Is a water softener for bathroom in Indore right for a hostel or PG?
This is where it fits best. A plumbed salt softener costs ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 upfront plus ₹6,000 or more a year in salt, and no warden or landlord will let a student cut into the pipes. A bathroom RO runs past ₹50,000. A screw-on filter needs neither permission nor tools.
- It works as a tap filter for hard water or a shower filter in Indore rooms, with both fittings in the box.
- No salt, chemicals or waste water, so nothing to refill or drain.
- When the semester ends, it unscrews and moves with you.

What does the filter do to Indore water, and what does it leave alone?
On borewell water, the job is calcium and magnesium. They coat hair so it feels dry and breaks easily, stop shampoo from lathering, and push skin away from its natural acidity so moisturisers sit on top. Sediment is caught first, CareTec neutralises dissolved calcium and magnesium so limescale does not build up, and a final layer takes out chlorine. Output water sits at pH 5.5 to 6.5.
It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals. It is a bathing filter, not a drinking one. Hair fall also has causes no filter touches, including diet, stress, sleep and genetics.
How long does a cartridge last on Indore borewell water?
About 3 to 4 months, or roughly 25,000 litres. Bore water that carries more sediment can load a cartridge sooner, so check it after the dry months. Replacements cost ₹699 for municipal water and ₹899 for the borewell and tanker cartridge. Before you buy, a quick home hardness test tells you which source you are actually bathing in.
Compare both filters by water source on the bathing water filter page, or see the shower filter for hair if frizz and hair fall are the main worry. Nearby, read our pages on water softener filter in Bhopal and Nagpur.
Indore water softener questions
Is borewell water in Indore worse than Narmada water?
Is borewell water in Indore worse than Narmada water?
Usually, yes. Borewell water here is groundwater from the Malwa plateau and carries far more calcium and magnesium than the treated Narmada supply. Some borewell pockets test above 800 ppm TDS, which is why borewell homes report more dryness, frizz and breakage.
Why does my friend's flat have softer water than my hostel?
Why does my friend's flat have softer water than my hostel?
Your sources probably differ. A Narmada-fed flat and a borewell-fed hostel in the same area can have completely different water. The bore, not the postcode, decides how hard the water is.
Will washing hair with stored RO water work instead?
Will washing hair with stored RO water work instead?
It helps, because RO water is low in minerals, but carrying buckets for every wash is hard to keep up. Filtering at the tap or shower gives a similar result without the daily effort.
Do vinegar or curd rinses remove the buildup?
Do vinegar or curd rinses remove the buildup?
For one wash. They lift mineral film from hair briefly but do nothing for skin or for the next wash in the same water.
How soon do hair and skin feel different?
How soon do hair and skin feel different?
Most people notice softer hair and less tightness within two to four weeks, with shedding and scalp comfort settling over a couple of months. Results vary, and water is only one factor.
Does it lower the water pressure in the shower?
Does it lower the water pressure in the shower?
Slightly, as any inline cartridge adds some resistance. A sharp drop after a few weeks usually means the cartridge is full of sediment and due for a change.
