How hard is the water across Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida?
Each city runs on a canal-and-groundwater mix, and the share of each decides how hard your tap is.
- Delhi: the Delhi Jal Board pipes treated water from the Yamuna, the Ganga via the Upper Ganga Canal, and Bhakra storage. Colonies with patchy supply fall back on borewells, which are typically very hard with high TDS.
- Gurgaon (Gurugram): old Sectors 1 to 57 get Yamuna canal water through the Basai treatment plants. Newer sectors, Sohna Road and parts of DLF lean on private borewells in the Aravalli aquifer.
- Noida: the Noida Authority blends treated Upper Ganga canal water with groundwater from tube wells and Ranney wells. Published sampling across the Greater Noida sub-basin found 91 to 678 mg/L total hardness, and one Noida reading in Sector 41 reached 975 mg/L.
Our guides to Delhi hard water and Noida and Ghaziabad water cover each city in depth.
Which hard water filter in Delhi NCR suits your area?
| Area | Usual source | What Care Dale's city guides report | Filter to pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central, East and parts of South Delhi | DJB Yamuna and Ganga supply | Moderate, degrades in old pipes | Municipal Water |
| Dwarka, Najafgarh, South-West Delhi | Borewell groundwater | Very hard, high TDS | Borewell/Tanker Water |
| Rohini, Saket, Chhatarpur | Groundwater plus tankers | Hard and variable | Borewell/Tanker Water |
| Gurgaon Sectors 1 to 43, DLF Phases 1 and 2 | Yamuna canal | 250 to 450 ppm TDS | Municipal Water |
| Gurgaon Sectors 44 to 57 | Canal plus borewell top-up | 300 to 600 ppm | Borewell/Tanker Water if the society tops up |
| Gurgaon Sectors 58 to 90 | GMDA piped plus heavy borewell | 600 to 1,500+ ppm | Borewell/Tanker Water |
| Sohna Road | Borewell-dominant | 700 to 1,800 ppm in dry months | Borewell/Tanker Water |
| Core Noida sectors | Ganga canal blend plus Ranney wells | Moderate but variable | Municipal Water if supply is steady canal blend |
| Greater Noida, Greater Noida West, Ghaziabad | Tube wells, groundwater, tankers | Hard to very hard | Borewell/Tanker Water |
The Borewell/Tanker version is built to handle inlet water up to about 1,800 ppm TDS, and the Municipal version up to about 800 ppm. Treat those as sizing, never a reduction claim. Booster pumps and overhead tanks mean two floors of one tower can read differently, so test with a home hardness check.
Why is Gurgaon water hardest above Sector 57?
Because new Gurgaon was built faster than its pipes, so anyone pricing a water softener in Gurgaon should start with the sector number. Big group housing societies in Sectors 58 to 90 came online before canal supply did, so many still bathe in borewell water from a rocky, mineral-rich aquifer. Those sectors read 600 to 1,200 ppm at the low end of the band and 700 to 1,500 ppm or more further out.
Inside DLF, Phases 4 and 5 sit further from the canal feeder and lean on borewells more than Phases 1 to 3. GMDA's Chandu Budhera plant is meant to cut borewell reliance in Sectors 58 to 80; until your society confirms it is on that supply, assume borewell. The Gurugram sector-wise TDS guide lists every band.
How does a bathroom water softener cope with NCR water?
Within the ultrafiltration membrane housing, CareTec media neutralise dissolved calcium and magnesium, preventing limescale buildup and leaving skin and hair free from hard water damage. This does not rely on chemical exchange, which needs very frequent maintenance (every 2 weeks).
The Borewell/Tanker cartridge layers sediment, an extra hardness layer, CareTec mesh and chlorine removal; the Municipal cartridge drops the extra hardness layer. Output sits at pH 5.5 to 6.5 with no salt, chemicals or waste water.
It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals. That matters in Delhi, where some groundwater is very high in dissolved salts: the filter handles hardness and chlorine for bathing, and drinking water still needs an RO purifier.
What does it cost against a whole-house softener?
| Option | Upfront | Yearly running cost | On a two-year lease |
|---|---|---|---|
| Care Dale Borewell/Tanker Water (4.95/5, 295 reviews) | ₹1,899 |
₹899 cartridge every 3 to 4 months | Moves with you |
| Care Dale Municipal Water (4.97/5, 515 reviews) | ₹1,499 |
₹699 cartridge every 3 to 4 months | Moves with you |
| Whole-house salt softener | ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 | ₹6,000+ in salt | Stays with the plumbing |
| Bathroom RO | ₹50,000+ | Service and waste water | Rarely practical |
A cartridge lasts about 25,000 litres, which works out to three or four cartridges a year for most homes.

Delhi NCR water softener questions
How often do NCR borewell homes change cartridges?
How often do NCR borewell homes change cartridges?
Every 3 to 4 months for most homes, and sooner where the water carries heavy sediment. The cartridge starts white and turns brown as it fills, so the colour shows when it is done.
Is Greater Noida water worse than Noida?
Is Greater Noida water worse than Noida?
Often, yes. Newer Greater Noida and Greater Noida West sectors lean more on groundwater and private tankers, while core Noida gets a larger share of canal-blended supply. Readings still vary block by block.
Can a shower filter for Gurgaon water handle Sohna Road borewells?
Can a shower filter for Gurgaon water handle Sohna Road borewells?
A borewell-rated filter is built for inlet water up to about 1,800 ppm TDS, which covers the Sohna Road band in most months. It reduces hardness and chlorine; it does not lower TDS or remove dissolved salts.
Is it the water or Delhi's dry air?
Is it the water or Delhi's dry air?
Usually both. Low humidity and pollution dry out hair and skin, and hard water adds a mineral film on top. You cannot change the air, so the water at your shower is the part you can control, alongside moisturising and scalp care.
Should I trust my society's claim of full canal supply?
Should I trust my society's claim of full canal supply?
Test it. Many borewell-augmented societies blend without saying so, and readings swing through the day. A TDS meter at the bathroom tap, morning and night, tells you more than any notice board.
Will it fit the shower arm in a DDA or builder flat?
Will it fit the shower arm in a DDA or builder flat?
Most Indian shower arms and tap spouts use a standard half-inch thread, and both fittings come in the box. Concealed spouts and sensor taps are the exceptions.
