Why does municipal water need a chlorine filter for the shower?
City boards such as BWSSB, HMWSSB, Chennai Metro Water and MCGM disinfect piped water so it stays safe on its way to your home. The Indian standard IS 10500 asks for at least 0.2 mg/L of free residual chlorine at the consumer tap, so plants dose higher and let it fade through the pipes. Our guide to chlorine in tap water in India sets out the limits.
That chlorine is doing its job for drinking water. In a daily shower it is harsh on skin and hair, and a warm shower releases it as you bathe. Most municipal supply is also moderately hard, so the same water leaves a film on skin and hair after rinsing. A shower filter for chlorine treats both at the outlet you actually wash under.
Which chlorine shower filter fits your water?
| Filter | Price | Built for | Built to handle inlet water up to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Filter for Municipal Water (4.97/5, 515 reviews) | ₹1,499 |
Chlorinated city or corporation supply, moderate hardness | About 800 ppm TDS |
| Filter for Borewell/Tanker Water (4.95/5, 295 reviews) | ₹1,899 |
Borewell, tanker or mixed supply, high hardness | About 1,800 ppm TDS |
For piped city water, the municipal version is the chlorine filter to pick. If your building mixes corporation water with borewell or tanker loads, choose the borewell and tanker version, which keeps the chlorine removal layer and adds an extra hardness layer. The ppm figures describe the inlet water each filter is built to handle. They are not a reduction claim.
How does a shower filter remove chlorine?
The municipal cartridge filters in three layers, with no salt, chemicals or waste water:
- Sediment layer: catches sand and particles from pipes and overhead tanks.
- CareTec mesh: handles the calcium and magnesium that cause hard water damage.
- Chlorine removal layer: takes out 96% of chlorine before the water reaches your shower head.
Within the ultrafiltration membrane housing, CareTec media neutralise dissolved calcium and magnesium, preventing limescale buildup and leaving skin and hair free from hard water damage. This does not rely on chemical exchange, which needs very frequent maintenance (every 2 weeks).
Water leaves the filter at pH 5.5 to 6.5. It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals. It is a bathing filter, so keep your kitchen purifier for drinking water.
An independent clinical study (50 participants, TDS above 500 ppm, 4 weeks) found 78% hair fall reduction, 11% scalp hydration increase and 87% would recommend Care Dale. Hair fall also depends on diet, stress, sleep and genetics, so a filter is not a cure.
Does a chlorine filter remove chloramine too?
Not as a stated claim. Some utilities disinfect with chloramine, a chlorine and ammonia compound that lasts longer in the pipes. Care Dale's 96% figure is for chlorine, and the brand makes no chloramine claim. If your board has confirmed chloramine supply, read chloramine vs chlorine in shower water before you choose a filter.
Shower arm or tap: where should a chlorine filter go?
| Your bathroom fitting | Will it fit? |
|---|---|
| Threaded shower arm | Yes. Fit it between the arm and your existing shower head |
| Pillar cock, wall-mixer spout or basin mixer with a removable aerator | Yes. Use it as a chlorine filter for the tap, in place of the aerator |
| Concealed or ceiling shower with no exposed thread | No. Fit it on the bathroom tap instead |
Fit it where you actually wash. In a home that bathes from a bucket, a chlorine water filter for the tap you fill it from does the same job as a shower head chlorine filter. Indian taps and shower arms use a standard half-inch thread, both fittings come in the box, and there is no drilling or pipe cutting. More detail is in our tap fit guide.
What does a chlorine shower filter cost?
| Chlorine shower filter | Whole-house salt softener | Bathroom RO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | ₹1,499 | ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 | ₹50,000+ |
| Running cost | ₹699 cartridge every 3 to 4 months | ₹6,000+ a year in salt | Membranes and service |
| Install | 2 minutes, no plumber | Plumbing and floor space | Plumbing work |
| Chlorine at the shower | 96% removed | Not its main job | Not built for shower flow |
A cartridge lasts 3 to 4 months, or about 25,000 litres, which puts the running cost at roughly ₹175 to ₹235 a month. The cartridge starts white and turns brown as it traps chlorine, sediment and hardness, so you can see when it is done.
If your water is also hard, the bathing water filter page compares both versions by source, and the shower filter for hair page covers frizz and hair fall. Bathing a little one? Chlorine shower filter questions
Can I remove chlorine by letting bath water stand or by boiling it?
Can I remove chlorine by letting bath water stand or by boiling it?
Partly, for a bucket. In one study, tap water left at room temperature for 24 hours lost about 62% of its free chlorine, and boiling needs a long, uncovered boil. Neither works for a running shower, which keeps bringing in fresh chlorinated water. See how to remove chlorine from water.
Does a chlorine shower filter work with hot water from a geyser?
Does a chlorine shower filter work with hot water from a geyser?
Yes. The filter is hot water compatible, so it can sit on a shower or mixer tap fed by a geyser line.
Will a chlorine filter make tap water safe to drink?
Will a chlorine filter make tap water safe to drink?
No. It is built for bathing water and makes no drinking-water claim. The chlorine in city water is there to keep it safe to drink, so use a purifier that meets IS 10500 for drinking and cooking.
Does a chlorine filter help with hard water as well?
Does a chlorine filter help with hard water as well?
Yes. The municipal cartridge also blocks 92% of calcium, so the same unit handles the moderate hardness found in most city supply. For very hard borewell or tanker water, the version with an extra hardness layer is the better match.
Does a shower filter reduce water pressure?
Does a shower filter reduce water pressure?
Slightly. Every inline cartridge adds a little resistance, and on a normal supply most people do not notice. A sharp drop after some weeks usually means the cartridge is full and due for a change.
Will the chlorine smell go away after fitting the filter?
Will the chlorine smell go away after fitting the filter?
The filter removes 96% of chlorine at the outlet, so the bleach-like smell in the shower is usually far weaker. Run the water for a minute after fitting a new cartridge to flush it.
How often should I replace the chlorine filter cartridge?
How often should I replace the chlorine filter cartridge?
Every 3 to 4 months, or about 25,000 litres, for most homes. Change it sooner if it turns fully brown first, which shows it has filled up.
