Can You Bathe in RO Reject Water in India?

No, and the reason runs opposite to what most people assume. Reject water is not dirty water. It is concentrated water. Everything the membrane refuses to pass leaves the machine in a smaller volume, so it arrives more concentrated than the supply that went in.
That makes it a poor choice for hair and skin, and a good one for floors, flushing and washing a scooter. Care Dale builds a dermatologist-certified, clinically tested shower filter, and plainly: it does not rescue reject water either.
What is RO reject water, and how much of it does a purifier make?
RO reject water is the stream a reverse osmosis membrane pushes aside while making drinking water. The machine splits your supply in two: a low-salt permeate you store and drink, and a saltier concentrate that runs to the drain. In most Indian homes the drain stream is the bigger of the two.
The scale is on record. In its May 2019 order, the National Green Tribunal noted that RO makers themselves admitted recovery was no more than 20 percent, matching the BIS specification of the day, and directed a rise to 60 percent and later 75 percent.
At 20 percent recovery, four litres go to the drain for every litre stored. Arithmetic, not a claim about any brand.
Why is reject water harder than the water that went in?
Because dissolved salts do not disappear, they relocate. The membrane blocks calcium, magnesium and the rest, and the same total load leaves in a smaller volume. Engineers call the multiplier the concentration factor, and it depends almost entirely on recovery.
The American Membrane Technology Association publishes the formula: concentration factor equals one divided by one minus recovery. At 60 percent recovery that is 2.5 times the feed, at 75 percent four times. The note lists calcium carbonate among the salts that concentrate and scale.
A 2021 survey of community RO plants in Sri Lanka's North Central Province measured hardness removal averaging 95.8 percent. Almost all of that hardness leaves through the reject line.
What TDS does RO reject water usually show?
Always higher than the feed, by a factor your recovery rate decides. A borewell supply reading 600 ppm through a unit recovering 60 percent produces a reject stream near 1,500 ppm. The 2019 tribunal order worked with a practical reuse ceiling of 2,100 mg/L.
Do not estimate it. A handheld meter under the drain line answers it in seconds, and the reading shifts with season and source. Remember that TDS and hardness measure different things, and only one explains your soap.
Apartments complicate it, since borewell readings across Indian apartment blocks swing between tankers, monsoon recharge and summer drawdown. One reading in March tells you little about August.

So can you bathe in RO reject water?
You can, physically, and you will notice the mistake before the shampoo is out. Bathing water is judged on hardness rather than on whether it is drinkable, and reject water is reliably the hardest water in the house. Every effect hard water has on hair and skin is amplified in it.
IIT Kanpur's notes record that hard water leaves a film on hair, fabric and glassware because calcium and magnesium react with soap rather than lathering with it. That reaction is the curd you feel on the tiles.
Heat compounds it. A CIBSE module notes that calcium carbonate leaves solution past roughly 35 to 40 degrees, and that soaps form scum in hard water. A hot shower in concentrated reject water combines both.
What does concentrated hard water do to hair and skin?
It mostly changes how your products behave. Less lather means more shampoo, more residue, a coated dull feel once hair dries. On skin, the metallic soap forming instead of lather is what dermatology research returns to.
A 2012 World Allergy Organization Journal report found metallic soap aggravating skin conditions in atopic dermatitis patients. A UK Biobank study of 306,531 adults reported higher eczema odds where water exceeded 200 mg/L of calcium carbonate.
Read both as association, not proof. Hair and skin respond to diet, stress, genetics, thyroid function and medication as much as to water. Sudden shedding belongs with a dermatologist, and safe TDS ranges for a hair wash are context, not diagnosis.
Where should RO reject water actually go?
Into everything that does not touch you or your food. The 2019 tribunal order, quoting a joint NEERI, CPCB and IIT Delhi report, listed vehicle cleaning, mopping, utensil washing, flushing and gardening as fair uses below 2,100 mg/L, and suggested sprinkling grounds rather than potable water.
The same report warned that the reject can upset land, surface water or the sewerage system, and should be diluted before discharge. Alternate with ordinary water on plants, and keep it off anything you intend to eat.
Reject water scales fittings faster than anything else in the house, so never plumb it into a geyser or washing machine. If fixtures already crust over, start by clearing a scaled showerhead.
What actually helps at the shower itself?
Reject water is a disposal question. The bathing question is what leaves your shower head on an ordinary day, and that is measurable hardness. Under IS 10500:2012 hardness is acceptable to 200 mg/L and permissible to 600 mg/L for drinking, with no bathing standard.
A point-of-use filter treats the flow in a fixed order: Pre-Filtration for sediment, CareTec Ultra Filtration for hardness, then Chlorine and Impurities. There is a municipal piped supply version at ₹1,499 and one for borewell and tanker sources at ₹1,899.
The ratings of roughly 800 ppm and 1,800 ppm TDS describe what each unit tolerates at the inlet, not what it removes. The Care Dale filter is not a purification system, so it does not reduce total dissolved solids, nor does it separate out iron or heavy metals.
No shower filter, Care Dale included, addresses iron, heavy metals, chloramine, TDS or bacteria. It will not fix reject water. If you have not measured your supply, start with a bucket hardness check.
What to avoid
Five ways households get reject water wrong.
- Bathing in it to save water. It is the hardest water in the house, so every hard-water effect is amplified.
- Plumbing it into a geyser or washing machine. It scales heating elements faster than anything else you own.
- Pouring it undiluted onto soil. Salts accumulate in pots and beds over repeated waterings.
- Using it on anything you plan to eat. Keep it to ornamentals, floors and flushing.
- Judging it by how it looks. Clarity says nothing about dissolved load. Meter the drain line.
What four weeks usually look like
Week one changes your water bill, not your hair. Diverting the reject line into a drum shows up in how often you fill buckets for mopping and flushing.
If you also treat the shower stream, expect the first difference around days ten to fourteen: shampoo lathering with less product, less film on tiles. Weeks three and four are where combing gets easier and dullness eases.
Some notice very little, and that is a normal outcome, not a failure. Water is one input among several. Sudden shedding, scalp inflammation or a persistent rash needs medical assessment.

Does RO reject water damage appliances and fittings?
It accelerates scale. Concentrated calcium and magnesium precipitate onto heating elements and inside taps considerably faster than ordinary supply does. Keep it in a bucket for floors and flushing rather than plumbing it into any appliance that heats or stores water.
Can RO reject water be used for washing clothes?
Poorly, because hard water reacts with detergent to form scum instead of lather, so you spend more soap and still get greyed fabric and stiff towels. Rinsing in it leaves mineral residue in the weave. Mopping and flushing are far better matches.
Is RO reject water safe to touch at all?
Yes, for incidental contact. It is concentrated tap water rather than sewage, and the 2019 tribunal report called the exposure risk from reuse highly exaggerated. Whether it suits a daily shower is a separate question, and there the answer is no.
My purifier has no separate reject line. Where is that water going?
Straight into the drain under your sink, which is why most households never see it. Trace the thinner of the two outlet pipes behind the unit. Diverting it into a drum takes minutes, and it is the only way to measure or reuse it.
Does a shower filter lower the TDS of reject water?
