What TDS Level Is Safe for Washing Hair? A Practical Guide for India (2026)

The vast majority of people should be able to wash hair in soft water that is 200 ppm TDS and below. TDS that sits between 200-500 ppm is acceptable but will cause some level of moderate hard water damage. The safe level of wash water for hair is high enough that TDS values above 500 ppm would normally cause significant damage from calcium mineral build-up that would lead to damage to the cuticles. There are no government limits for the TDS value of bathing water in India. The limits established in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in their Drinking Water Quality Guidelines state that 500 mg/L is "acceptable" and 2000 mg/L is "permissible." These are only the limits for drinking water. Low shower filter will not reduce the TDS; it means hardness is neutralized and also chlorine is removed (another function).

What Is TDS and How Is It Measured?

The Total Dissolved Solids, which is abbreviated as TDS, refers to the total concentration of everything dissolved in your water. It can include all of the calcium, magnesium, sodium, bicarbonates, chlorides and sulphates - plus any trace metals. TDS can be expressed in mg/L or ppm, and in dilute waters, as the two have identical numerical values. Hand-held TDS meters enable measurement of conductivity and conversion back to ppm units (approximate price ₹200 to ₹500).

TDS is an average of everything. You can have two samples with the same TDS reading (for example: 400 ppm) but completely different effects on hair because one is mainly sodium bicarbonate and doesn't cause any issues while the other has mainly Ca and Mg which can be harmful. Chemistry trumps the number on the bottle.

How Does TDS Differ from Hardness for Hair?

The hardness layer is a proportion of your TDS that comes from Calcium and Magnesium, and its measured in mg/L of CaCO3 --and it damages your hair, Not the TDS itself. Also, two waters that are equivalent in ppm can be located in different bands of risk for causing damage to your hair based on the ratio of divalent cations (Ca & Mg) to sodium bicarbonate that comprise that ppm total.

How Is Hardness Different from TDS?

TDS measures all dissolved ions whereas hardness measures only calcium and magnesium ions that can bond to hair keratin. TDS has no effect on hardness and vice versa. The USGS, the WHO, has classified the total hardness into four bands and thus separates total dissolved solids into different domains according to their contribution to hardness.

According to the WHO Hardness in Drinking-water document, there are no documented health effects associated with hardness at regular drinking levels (citation reference is a hyperlink to an external source). However, many people experience cosmetic effects from the hardness of water before they reach any level considered to be a prohibitive level for consumption.

Why Does Hardness Damage Hair?

According to a scan electron microscope study performed by the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology, hair washed with hard water had calcium deposited on it in the amount of 0.804%, whereas hair washed with distilled water had a calcium deposit of only 0.26%, which is approximately three times more. The magnesium levels were also found to be approximately four times higher in a hair sample washed with hard water compared to a sample washed with distilled water. The hair's cuticles became ruffled, its tensile strength was decreased, and its diameter is decreased. Divalent ions bind to the hair's shaft while sodium and bicarbonate will not. A hair sample taken from a bore well in Mumbai having 400 ppm of minerals at 80 mg/L hardness will be much less harmful than a hair sample taken from a bore well in Bangalore that has 400 ppm of minerals at 250 mg/L hardness. What TDS Range Is Actually Safe for Hair?

None of the Indian authorities have provided a specific lower/upper limit for TDS, which indicates that all of the information below is based on a combination of the methods (see above) for determining the classifications of levels of hard and soft water, and the types of likely damages to hair, as shown in the hair-damage articles listed below.

Ideal: TDS under 200 ppm

Water with hardness levels typically below 60 mg/L (soft) has a little to no binding capability for calcium, excellent lathering and moisture retention on hair. This is similar to the measurements taken on water from Mumbai Municipal Corporation and select sources in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (industry estimates). Therefore, no additional filtration is necessary.

Acceptable with filter: 200 to 500 ppm

Supply of BWSSB and DJB for almost the entire area of supply and Chennai for the very few piped industries (industry estimate only). Hardness is fairly moderate (60 to 120 mg/L). Cuticle damage is still manageable. An A shower-mounted UF filter for municipal water that neutralizes calcium and pulls chlorine will be good enough. RO would be overkill.

High risk: above 500 ppm

The scenario of borewells and water delivered through tankers. Bangalore's outside circles (Whitefield, Sarjapur, Electronic City), Hyderabad's water supplied apartments (by tankers), Gurugram & Noida's high rise buildings often have water with hardness levels in excess of 180 mg/L (hard). Soap scum will build up after every wash; shirts will wear out faster, shampoo will not lather as much, and most likely require the use of a borewell and tanker variant to reduce the level of hardness on the water used.

The Central Ground Water Board Ground Water Year Book 2022-23 flags high hardness across the peninsular and north-Indian aquifers feeding most borewell apartments. "Industry estimate" just means the utility never published distribution data. And readings swing a lot. Building to building, season to season, plumbing age.

How to Test Your Water at Home

  1. Handheld TDS meter (₹200 to ₹500): plug-and-read. Total dissolved solids only, not hardness.
  2. Hardness test strips (₹400 to ₹800): dip and compare to get the concentration of CaCO3 in mg/L, which matters the most when trying to obtain quality hair.
  3. Lab test (₹500 to ₹1,500 at NABL-accredited labs): full ionic breakdown. Worth doing once.

BWSSB, DJB and MCGM sometimes publish ward-wise quality data. Sporadic, though. And expect month-to-month variation.

How Do You Lower TDS in Bathing Water?

Depends on what you are actually trying to fix. Drinking wants the TDS number pulled down. Hair washing wants hardness neutralised and chlorine gone. Two different problems, two different machines. For a side-by-side, see cartridge filters vs magnetic softeners vs RO.

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

RO is the only household device that actually lowers TDS. A semi-permeable membrane rejects 90 to 95% of dissolved solids - 600 ppm in, 30 to 60 ppm out. Above 500 ppm for drinking, you basically need it. But it draws electricity, needs a drain line and a pump. None of that fits a shower.

Ultrafiltration (UF) Shower Filters

UF membranes sit at roughly 0.01 micron. They strain out bacteria, sediment, particulates. Dissolved ions slip right through. TDS does not move. A good UF shower filter pairs the membrane with chlorine-removal media and a calcium-neutralisation matrix. Water Softeners and Distillation

A whole-house softener swaps Ca and Mg for sodium through resin beads. Hardness drops to near zero. TDS barely moves. Upfront ₹15,000 to ₹50,000, then ongoing salt. Distillation strips essentially all TDS, but nobody distils bathwater. See the Bangalore softener vs filter comparison.

Common Mistakes When Choosing a Shower Filter for Hair

  • Buying RO for the shower: it is kitchen-only, and wastes 70% of input water.
  • Trusting a TDS meter for hair safety: hardness (Ca+Mg) is what does the damage, not the headline TDS.
  • Picking a shower filter expecting TDS reduction: UF + carbon pulls chlorine and microbes. Dissolved salts stay.
  • Skipping the cartridge replacement schedule: spent media stops working past 3-6 months / 25 kL. Quietly.
  • Choosing a softener over a filter for hair: ion-exchange softeners need salt regeneration; UF needs neither.

A Quick Decision Rule

FAQs

Is 300 ppm TDS safe for washing hair?

Borderline. At 300 ppm, hardness usually lands in the 60 to 120 mg/L CaCO3 band (moderate) - manageable cuticle damage, not rapid breakage. A shower filter that neutralises calcium and strips chlorine clears most of the risk. For drinking, 300 ppm sits well inside the BIS 10500:2012 acceptable limit of 500 mg/L.

Can I use RO water to wash my hair?

You can. You do not need to. RO drops TDS to 30 to 60 ppm, gentler than hair actually needs. Hair tolerates water up to about 200 ppm without help, and RO at the shower is impractical anyway. Use RO for drinking, a shower-mounted ultrafiltration filter for hair.

Does a shower filter reduce TDS?

No. Not Care Dale, not not PuriFit, not WaterScience. Ultrafiltration-grade membranes let dissolved ions slip right through. What they do: cut chlorine, pull sediment, neutralise Ca and Mg so they stop binding to hair. TDS reduction needs reverse osmosis, distillation or deionisation. Not a shower filter.

What is the maximum TDS the BIS allows in drinking water?

IS 10500:2012 puts 500 mg/L as acceptable, 2000 mg/L as permissible "in the absence of an alternate source". Both are drinking-water numbers. No real bearing on bathing. Hair-relevant chemistry sits under hardness, and BIS treats that separately.

Why does Bangalore water feel worse than Mumbai water at the same TDS?

Because TDS hides hardness. A 350 ppm Bangalore borewell sample is mostly Ca and Mg leached from groundwater limestone. A 350 ppm Mumbai sample is mostly softer carbonates from treated lake water. Hair damage tracks the divalent cations, not the headline number. Test for hardness and the gap is obvious.

How quickly will filtered shower water improve hair fall?

New growth comes in without the calcium loading within four to eight weeks. Shedding usually slows in that same window. An independent clinical study at a Bangalore dermatology lab (50 participants, TDS above 500 ppm, four weeks) reported 78% hair fall reduction with a 0.01 micron ultrafiltration shower filter. Existing hair keeps its damage until it cycles out.

Should I install a softener if I already have an RO?

Not necessarily. RO is doing the drinking job. For bathing, a shower-mounted ultrafiltration filter is usually enough up to about 600 ppm TDS. Above that, or once limescale starts wrecking fixtures, the ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 outlay on a whole-house softener starts making sense.

Is bathing in high-TDS water harmful to skin too?

Yes. Same mechanism. Calcium and magnesium react with soap, form an insoluble film, sit on skin, disrupt the lipid barrier, and worsen dryness, itch and eczema flare-ups. Fix is the same: neutralise hardness and pull chlorine at the point of use.
