Gachibowli Water Problem: Kondapur and Madhapur Explained

Last updated: 23 July 2026.

Gachibowli's water problem is not a shortage of rivers. It is that the area was built faster than the pipes that were meant to serve it, so a large share of its apartments and villas run on borewells and private tankers instead of steady board supply.

The result is odd but consistent: Hyderabad's most expensive pin code tops the city's tanker league table. Bought tanker water is untreated groundwater, and groundwater in this granite belt is hard. That is what lands on your hair and skin at every wash.

This article explains what actually causes the water problem in Gachibowli, Kondapur and Madhapur, what it does to hair and skin, and what a filter can and cannot fix.

Why does Gachibowli have a water problem when it is Hyderabad's richest area?

Because private money puts up towers faster than the government lays trunk mains. Apartment blocks and villas arrived ahead of the pipeline, so plenty of buildings never got a full board connection, and the gap gets filled with society borewells and private tankers.

The numbers are lopsided. The Durgam Cheruvu division, which covers the core IT corridor, alone accounts for about 20% of Hyderabad's entire water tanker supply. In one April, Gachibowli, Madhapur and Kondapur booked close to 60,000 tankers out of 2.9 lakh citywide.

Piped hours are shrinking as well. The Federation of Gated Communities, Cyberabad, reported supply falling from roughly eight hours on alternate days to about four hours every two days, which pushes societies straight to private operators.

Which homes in the corridor actually run on borewell or tanker water?

Not all of them, and that is the point. Older colonies inside the piped network still get board water most weeks. Gated villa communities, ORR-side towers and anything built ahead of the mains lean on society bores and bought tankers, often blended into the same sump.

Where you live in the corridor What the tap usually runs on Hardness tendency
Older colonies inside the piped network Board piped supply, alternate days Moderate, rises when tankers top up
High-rise with piped supply plus a society bore Blend of piped water and groundwater Swings week to week with the mix
Gated villa community past the mains Society borewells and bought tankers Hard, and shifts with the tanker's source
New towers on the ORR fringe Mostly bought tankers Hardest and least predictable
PG rooms and rented flats on a shared sump Whatever the owner books that week Unknown until you test it

The scale is not marginal. Hyderabad logged 3.36 lakh tanker bookings in May 2026, the highest ever for that month, and that spike is why hair fall gets worse through tanker season.

Why is the borewell water under Kondapur and Madhapur so hard?

Because the corridor sits on old granite, and bores have to go deep to find water in it. The Central Ground Water Board records city groundwater being drawn from shallow and deep bore wells between 100 and 300 metres, through weathered and fractured rock that gives up calcium and magnesium along the way.

The water table is dropping too. The Ranga Reddy district Ground Water Department recorded depletion widening from 1.99 metres in January 2026 to 2.97 metres by April, with 40-storey construction named as a driver.

As shallow bores fail, societies deepen them or buy from someone else's. In the worst-hit western divisions, 70% to 90% of borewells were reported running dry, with levels down to 15 to 25 metres. Deeper almost never means softer, which is the crux of whether borewell water is safe for bathing.

Is tanker water harder on hair and skin than piped supply?

Often, and the bigger issue is that it keeps changing. Tanker water is untreated groundwater, usually drawn from agricultural bores outside the city, and the source can differ delivery to delivery. Your hair meets a different water chemistry every few days.

Residents describe the effect plainly. One Hyderabad household told Deccan Chronicle their tanker water was salty and hard, with the salt damaging their geyser through scale build-up. Scale on a heating element is the same mineral film that settles on hair and scalp.

Paying more buys you volume, not quality. Board tankers cost roughly ₹500 per 5 KL and private operators charge ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 for the same load, and neither publishes a water quality report with the delivery.

How do you find out what is really coming out of your tap?

Ask your association which source filled the sump this week, then measure it yourself. The answer changes with the season here, so a December reading tells you little about April. Two minutes with a soap test and a TDS meter beats guessing from your locality name, though TDS and hardness are two different numbers.

Indian standards give you the yardstick. IS 10500:2012 sets acceptable total hardness at 200 mg/L, permissible up to 600 mg/L where no alternative exists, and desirable TDS at 500 mg/L.

Test once after a tanker delivery and again on a piped day. The five home testing methods, and what each costs covers the soap shake, strips and lab options, while typical borewell readings from Indian apartment blocks show how wide the swing gets.

What actually helps in the Gachibowli, Kondapur and Madhapur belt?

Reduce the hardness and chlorine reaching your hair and skin at each wash, because you cannot control which water turns up. Fixing the supply is the water board's job and will take years. What lands on your scalp is a bathroom-level decision you can make this week.

What can a filter do, and what can it not?

A Care Dale filter reduces the hardness, chlorine and physical contaminants that drive dryness and breakage, so shampoo lathers and skincare absorbs. It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals.

Worth stating plainly: no shower filter, Care Dale included, addresses iron, heavy metals, chloramine, TDS or bacteria. Those need treatment further upstream. For the symptom side, read what hard water does to hair and skin across Hyderabad.

How long before you notice a difference?

Roughly four weeks. Softer hair and less skin tightness show up first, within two to three weeks, once the mineral film stops rebuilding. Shedding and scalp comfort lag behind, closer to two months. There is a week-by-week account of what changes if you want the detail.

An independent clinical study of 50 participants washing in water above 500 ppm TDS recorded a 78% reduction in hair fall over four weeks, an 11% increase in scalp hydration, and 87% saying they would recommend it. Results vary, and diet, stress, sleep and genetics still matter.

Curated Picks

Pick by what your sump actually receives, not by the locality name, and re-test every few months.

Both use the same CareTec 3-layer system: pre-filtration for sediment, CareTec ultra filtration for hardness, and a final layer for chlorine and impurities. It blocks 92% of calcium and removes 96% of chlorine, with no salt or waste water. Both fit in about two minutes and are dermatologist-certified, clinically tested.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the water problem in Gachibowli? Supply, not the rivers. The corridor grew ahead of the piped network, so many buildings depend on society borewells and private tankers. Groundwater under the area is falling, which pushes bore water harder and tanker demand higher every summer.

How is the water supply in Gachibowli? Piped supply exists but runs thin and irregular across much of the belt. Gated communities have reported it dropping to roughly four hours every two days at peak summer, from about eight hours on alternate days, with tankers covering the gap.

How much does a water tanker cost in Gachibowli? Board tankers cost around ₹500 for 5 KL; private operators charge ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 for the same load. That water is untreated groundwater. A shower or tap filter reduces hardness, chlorine and micro-particles. It does not lower TDS or remove iron, heavy metals or bacteria, because it is filtration, not a purifier.

What is the water problem in Kondapur? Much the same as Gachibowli next door: high-rise density sitting on an aquifer that cannot keep pace. Borewells run dry through summer, so societies buy tankers, and that water is groundwater whose source and hardness change delivery to delivery.

Is there a water crisis in Kondapur? Every summer, in the practical sense. Kondapur sits inside the divisions generating the bulk of Hyderabad's tanker bookings, and residents' associations there have reported monthly tanker bills running into lakhs. Winter is easier, but the groundwater trend is downward.

Which are the soft water areas in Hyderabad? No Hyderabad locality is reliably soft. Addresses on steady reservoir-fed piped supply are gentler than bore-fed ones, but the same street can differ building to building depending on the sump. Treat it as a per-building question and test.
