What Is Tanker Water in India? (2026)

Last updated: October 2026

> Quick Answer: Tanker water is bulk water delivered by truck to homes and buildings that piped supply does not reach, usually pumped from borewells. Because it is mostly groundwater, it often runs hard: 23 of 50 Bengaluru tanker loads tested crossed the BIS hardness limit of 200 mg/L. Treat it before drinking, since 34 of those loads failed coliform tests.

Apartments, restaurants, malls and function halls in fast-growing suburbs buy it by the load to top up sumps and overhead tanks. Demand peaks in the hot months, when local borewells run low and trucks bring water from further out.

Care Dale makes dermatologist-certified, clinically tested shower filters. This guide covers where tanker water comes from, how hard it gets, whether you can drink or bathe in it, and how to check a load.

Where does tanker water come from?

Borewells and open wells supply most private tankers, usually on the city's edge, with some loads drawn from lakes. Only a small share is treated water that a utility sells by the load from its own plants. Which one reaches your sump decides most of its quality.

A study of 50 Bengaluru tanker loads outlines tankers drawing from unregulated private wells and from lakes, mostly on the city's outskirts.

Utilities run the other kind. The Kerala Water Authority fills tanker lorries at its Aruvikkara treatment plant for domestic use. In Gurugram, the GMDA water tanker service takes bookings online and registers vendors separately for drinking water and for treated sewage (STP) water.

Households turn to tankers when their own borewells run dry in summer, as WELL Labs' Bengaluru water balance report points out. During Chennai's 2019 crisis, a PMC-indexed review records four million people relying solely on tankers.

Is tanker water hard or soft?

Tanker water is usually hard, since most loads are groundwater carrying calcium and magnesium dissolved from soil and rock. In the Bengaluru study, 23 of 50 samples went past the BIS acceptable hardness limit of 200 mg/L, and the hardest reached 434.6 mg/L. A few loads came out close to soft. Source matters.

IIT Kanpur's note on hardness states that hard water takes more soap to lather and can leave a film on hair. The BIS IS 10500 limits treat 200 mg/L as acceptable, and 600 mg/L as permissible only where no other source exists.

Measure BIS acceptable BIS permissible Bengaluru tanker loads (50 samples)
Total hardness 200 mg/L 600 mg/L Trace to 434.6 mg/L; 23 above 200
TDS 500 mg/L 2,000 mg/L Trace to 5,200 mg/L
Turbidity 1 NTU 5 NTU 0 to 4 NTU
Coliform bacteria E. coli nil E. coli nil 34 loads above 1,600 MPN per 100 mL

On the coast, tankers can also carry chloride from seawater intrusion, as covered in Chennai tanker water and hair.

What is the TDS of tanker water?

There is no single figure. Most Bengaluru loads in the study read 1,000 mg/L or less, but three read 1,600, 2,400 and 5,200 mg/L, and the top two exceed the BIS permissible limit of 2,000 mg/L. TDS counts everything dissolved, so it shows how mineral-heavy a load is, not whether it is safe.

Hardness is only one part of TDS, so a cheap meter works as a screen, not a diagnosis. A reading that jumps from one week to the next often points to a change of source.

For what society-level readings mean, see borewell water numbers in Indian apartments. TDS is a testing number only. No tap or shower filter lowers it.

Is tanker water safe for drinking?

Not without treatment. BIS IS 10500 allows no E. coli in drinking water, yet 34 of the 50 Bengaluru tanker samples had coliform counts above 1,600 per 100 mL. Utility tankers loaded at a treatment plant start cleaner, but the truck, the hose and your sump can still contaminate the water in transit.

The same study found low dissolved oxygen in 20 of 50 samples, a sign of pollution at the source. It calls for tanker water to be monitored during distribution, still largely unregulated.

For drinking, use a separate supply or a purifier chosen from a lab report on your water.

Is tanker water safe for bathing and hair?

It is generally usable for bathing, but hard loads are tough on hair and skin. Calcium and magnesium bind with shampoo, so lather is poor, and hard water can leave a film that makes hair feel rough and dull. Grit from the hose or a stirred-up sump can also leave hair feeling sandy after a fill.

Hair fall has several causes, from diet and stress to thyroid function and genetics. Water is one factor. The seasonal pattern is covered in summer hair fall and tanker season and a Hyderabad case in Gachibowli's water problem; persistent or patchy loss belongs with a dermatologist.

How do you check tanker water quality?

Check every delivery at the hose before it enters the sump, then test the stored water. A clear bottle and five minutes show sand, silt and rust, a TDS meter or hardness strip shows the mineral load, and only a lab test shows bacteria. Ask the supplier where the water was drawn from.

The five-minute method is in checking tanker water for sediment.

  1. Source: ask which well, lake or plant the load came from
  2. Sediment: refuse a load that leaves grit, a lasting haze or orange flakes
  3. Minerals: log a TDS or hardness reading each week
  4. Bacteria: send a sample to a lab before drinking any of it

Which shower filter suits tanker water?

The right fit is a point-of-use filter built for high-hardness water and fitted at the shower and tap. It reduces hardness, chlorine and grit where water meets hair and skin, where tanker water does its most visible damage. It is a bathing filter, not a tanker water purifier, and it does not make the water drinkable.

Care Dale's filter for borewell and tanker water runs a sediment pre-filter first, then an extra hardness layer, CareTec ultrafiltration, and a chlorine and impurities stage. Within the ultrafiltration membrane housing, CareTec media neutralise dissolved calcium and magnesium, preventing limescale buildup and leaving skin and hair free from hard water damage. This does not rely on chemical exchange, which needs very frequent maintenance (every 2 weeks).

An independent clinical study at a Bangalore dermatology lab (50 participants, TDS above 500 ppm, 4 weeks) recorded 78% hair fall reduction and an 11% increase in scalp hydration, and 87% would recommend Care Dale to others. One cartridge lasts 3 to 4 months or 25kL, though tanker grit can load its front layer sooner.

The Care Dale filter is not a purification system, so it does not reduce total dissolved solids (TDS), nor does it separate out iron or heavy metals. No shower filter, Care Dale included, addresses iron, heavy metals, chloramine, TDS or bacteria.

What four weeks usually look like

In the first week, the change shows up mostly at the wash: shampoo lathers with less product, and the coated feel after rinsing fades.

Over weeks two and three, many people notice less tangling during wet combing and less dryness on the scalp and skin. The cartridge also changes colour as it collects sediment and rust.

By week four, lengths usually feel smoother, though existing breakage does not reverse.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is tanker water different from borewell water? Often it is borewell water, just pumped elsewhere and trucked to you. The difference is control: your own borewell has a known depth and history, while a tanker load can change source between deliveries and passes through a truck and hose first.

How does tanker water compare with municipal supply? Municipal supply is usually the more controlled of the two. It is treated at a plant and arrives by pipe, while most private tanker water is untreated groundwater. A utility tanker filled at a treatment plant is the exception, so ask where each load was filled.

How much water does a tanker hold? Sizes vary by supplier and city, so ask before you book. The Kerala Water Authority, for example, runs its own tankers of 5,000 and 12,000 litres. Because one load goes into a shared sump, a single bad delivery reaches every flat on that supply.

Is tank water clean? Only if the tank is maintained. Silt settles on the floor of sumps and overhead tanks and lifts back into the flow when the pump runs fast. Clean both at least every six months, keep the lids sealed, and flush the lines after any supply cut.

Will a filter remove bacteria from tanker water? No. A shower or tap filter reduces hardness minerals, chlorine, odours and micro-particles, which is what affects hair and skin at every wash. It does not lower TDS or remove iron, heavy metals or bacteria, because it is filtration rather than purification.
