Vizag Water: Hard, Soft or Salty?

Last updated: August 2026.

Vizag does not have one water answer, and the reason is the coast. The GVMC piped supply comes from surface reservoirs and the Yeleru canal, and runs moderately hard rather than extreme.

Groundwater is where it changes. Bore wells near the shoreline can turn salty rather than simply hard, because seawater pushes into aquifers pumped faster than rain refills them. That is a different problem from the hardness inland cities deal with.

Below: where the city's water comes from, which zones run hardest, what saline intrusion means for your hair, how to test your tap, and what a dermatologist-certified, clinically tested filter can and cannot do.

Is Vizag water hard or soft?

Moderately hard in most of the city, but not everywhere. Bore well sampling across the GVMC area recorded total hardness between 171 mg/L and 365 mg/L, averaging 237 mg/L. Piped reservoir water is gentler; coastal bores are a separate case.

In that same study of 21 bore wells, dissolved solids ran from 261 mg/L to 1,520 mg/L and averaged 852 mg/L, almost every reading above the BIS limit of 500 mg/L. Hardness alone does not explain that, and near the coast the extra load is salt, a reminder that TDS and hardness measure two different things.

Where does Visakhapatnam's water supply come from?

Surface water, almost entirely. GVMC draws on the Yeleru reservoir and its canal, on Godavari water pumped into that system, and on local reservoirs including Meghadrigedda, Raiwada, Tatipudi, Gambheeram and Mudasarlova. Local bores are a fallback.

Industry takes a large share of the same system. Reporting from 2024 put the city's drinking requirement at about 80 million gallons a day, with roughly 50 more going to industry, Yeleru split between the public supply and the steel plant.

When reservoirs drop through summer, households fall back on bore wells and tankers, and the shower water changes with them. Chennai sees the same tanker-season swing.

Which areas of Vizag have water problems?

The shortage map and the hardness map are not the same. Piped areas such as PM Palem, Shivajipalem, Maddilapalem, Seethammadhara and MVP complain mostly about how little arrives in summer. Hardness and salinity complaints come from bore well pockets and the belt nearest the sea.

Area / zone Usual source Hardness tendency
Core wards on GVMC piped supply Yeleru canal and reservoirs Moderate; gentlest in the city
PM Palem, Shivajipalem, Maddilapalem, Seethammadhara, MVP Piped supply plus summer tankers Variable; depends on the tanker
Old Gajuwaka, Peda Gantyada, Marripalem Local bore well groundwater Harder; chloride past the limit
Anakapalli belt Bore well groundwater Hardest readings in the survey
Shoreline belt, Bheemili towards Paravada Shallow coastal aquifer Salty rather than hard

Why can two neighbouring buildings differ?

Bore depth, distance from the shoreline and where a tanker was last filled all move the reading. The GVMC survey found chloride between 106 mg/L and 321 mg/L across its wells, the same scatter seen in borewell TDS readings across Indian apartment blocks. Only a test on your own tap settles it.

Why is coastal borewell water salty rather than just hard?

Because of saline intrusion. When coastal bore wells are pumped faster than rain recharges them, the pressure holding back seawater falls and salt moves inland into the aquifer. That lifts chloride and TDS without necessarily lifting hardness.

The pattern is well documented here. A study of 41 habitations found sodium to chloride ratios pointing to seawater intrusion in 30 samples before the monsoon and 38 after it. Earlier work in the GVMC area found chloride rising the closer a well sat to the sea, which the authors attributed to over-pumping.

CGWB records that in coastal alluvial deposits groundwater is usually brackish or saline, with fresh water limited to shallow depths. Sampling within 20 km of the coast found intrusion indicators everywhere, eight sites worse than the rest.

Is Vizag water good for hair?

On piped reservoir supply, reasonably so. On a hard bore well, less so, and on a salty coastal bore it is a different complaint entirely. Hardness minerals leave a film that makes hair feel rough and snap more easily.

Hard water does not pull hair out at the root. Calcium and magnesium bind to the shaft and scalp, so shampoo struggles to foam. Hair soaked in hard water lost tensile strength and broke more readily than in deionised water, which is why breakage, not shedding, is the usual complaint. Dermatologists see the same long-term hard-water damage pattern in clinic, and it repeats in Hyderabad's bore-fed neighbourhoods.

Water is one factor among several. Diet, stress, sleep and genetics also drive shedding; your supply is just the part you control.

What does it do to your skin?

It dries and irritates. Hardness minerals react with soap to leave a residue that strips natural oils and raises the skin's surface pH. Tightness, flaking and dullness follow, worst for people with eczema or dry skin.

How do you test whether your water is hard or salty?

Test the tap you bathe with, not your drinking-water source. Hardness and salinity feel similar yet need different fixes: one is a mineral problem, the other is salt.

  1. The soap shake test: shake soap in a bottle of your water. Plenty of bubbles means soft; few bubbles and a milky layer means hard.
  2. A TDS meter: a low-cost pocket device that reports dissolved solids instantly, useful between tanker loads.
  3. A hardness strip or a BIS-accredited lab test: the only way to get a real hardness figure, and to see chloride separately.

What counts as too high?

Indian standards set a desirable TDS of 500 mg/L and acceptable total hardness of 200 mg/L, per BIS limits for drinking water. If hardness sits near the limit but TDS runs far above it, salinity is the likelier culprit. For the detail, here is every home hardness test compared, with what each one costs.

What actually helps with Vizag's water?

Match the fix to the problem. If your water is hard, reduce the hardness and chlorine reaching hair and skin at each wash. If it is salty from coastal intrusion, that is a building supply question, not a bathroom one.

  • Stored RO water is gentler for washing hair, and plenty of Vizag homes keep a bucket aside, but hauling it every wash rarely lasts.
  • Vinegar or lemon rinses lift mineral film off hair for a day, then the next wash puts it back, and do nothing for skin.
  • A shower or tap filter treats the water at the point of use, with no plumbing and no landlord permission.

What can a filter actually fix?

A Care Dale filter reduces the hardness, chlorine and sediment that drive dryness and breakage, so shampoo lathers again. It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals.

Be blunt about salt. No shower filter desalinates, so if seawater intrusion has turned your bore salty, filtration at the tap will not fix it. To be clear about the whole category: no shower filter, Care Dale included, addresses iron, heavy metals, chloramine, TDS or bacteria. Where the problem really is hardness and chlorine, match the filter to the water you measured.

Most people notice softer hair and less post-shower tightness in two to four weeks. In an independent clinical study, 50 participants washing in water above 500 ppm TDS for four weeks saw a 78% hair fall reduction and an 11% scalp hydration increase, and 87% would recommend it. No filter cures hair fall on its own, so diet, stress and sleep still matter.

Curated Picks

Pick by what feeds your tap, then re-test every few months.

Both use the CareTec 3-layer system, pre-filtration for sediment, CareTec ultra filtration for hardness, and a final layer for chlorine and impurities, fit a standard tap or shower in two minutes, and are dermatologist-certified, clinically tested.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Vizag water hard or soft? Moderately hard across most of the city. Bore well sampling in the GVMC area averaged 237 mg/L total hardness, above the 200 mg/L acceptable mark but well below what inland hard-water cities record. Coastal bores differ.

Is Vizag water good for hair? On piped reservoir supply, reasonably. A shower or tap filter reduces the hardness minerals, chlorine, odours and micro-particles that damage hair and skin at every wash. It does not lower TDS or remove iron, heavy metals or bacteria, because it is filtration, not a purifier.

What are the water problem areas in Vizag? Two problems in two places. PM Palem, Shivajipalem, Maddilapalem, Seethammadhara and MVP report summer shortages. Salinity concentrates along the shoreline; the hardest bore readings came from the Anakapalli side, inland.

What is Vizag's water supply like? Stretched in summer. The city needs roughly 80 million gallons a day for drinking while industry draws about 50 more from the same system, so reservoir levels decide your tap by June.

Where does the Visakhapatnam water supply come from? Surface water, mostly. The Yeleru reservoir and canal do the heavy lifting, topped up by Godavari water, alongside local reservoirs including Meghadrigedda, Raiwada, Tatipudi, Gambheeram and Mudasarlova. Local groundwater only fills gaps.

What is the Vizag water TDS? It varies too widely by source for a city figure to mean much. A cheap handheld meter gives your reading in seconds. Anything above the BIS desirable 500 mg/L is worth investigating, especially if the water tastes brackish.
