Kolkata Hard Water: What It Means for Hair and Skin

Last updated: 23 July 2026.

Whether Kolkata's water is hard depends on where your building gets it. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation's piped supply is treated Hooghly surface water and usually tests moderate. Groundwater is a different story: the tubewells and private borewells that many blocks rely on run harder, and the reading swings from one address to the next.

That split is why one Kolkata flat reports nothing unusual while a friend two kilometres away loses hair in handfuls after every bath. Below: where your water comes from, which zones run hardest, what the numbers look like, and what a dermatologist-certified, clinically tested filter can and cannot fix.

Does Kolkata have hard water?

In part. The piped network runs on Hooghly surface water, which comes through treatment moderately hard at worst. The genuinely hard water is almost always groundwater, drawn by municipal tubewells, by blocks running their own bores, and by the municipalities ringing the city.

Where does Kolkata's water actually come from?

The corporation draws raw water from the Hooghly and treats it at five works listed on its water supply page: the Indira Gandhi plant at Palta, Garden Reach, Jai Hind Jal Prakalpa at Dhapa, Jorabagan and Watgunge.

Groundwater fills the gaps, and more of them than official figures suggest. Roughly 15 per cent of core Kolkata's water is officially groundwater, but household use runs closer to 25 to 30 per cent.

Which Kolkata areas have the hardest water?

Wherever a bore or tubewell stands in for the treated Hooghly supply: the added areas on the city's edge, the Salt Lake, Rajarhat and New Town blocks running private tubewells, and Howrah and its neighbouring municipalities. The older central wards on full piped supply sit at the gentler end.

Area / zone Usual source Hardness tendency
Central and north Kolkata wards Treated Hooghly supply Moderate, usually within limits
Added areas: Behala, Garia, Jadavpur, Tollygunge Piped supply topped up by tubewells Mixed; harder where tubewells run
Salt Lake, Rajarhat, New Town Piped supply plus complex borewells Variable; bore-fed blocks run harder
Howrah and peripheral municipalities Groundwater and mixed supply Harder and more variable
Any building on its own bore Shallow or deep groundwater Hardest and least predictable

Why can two neighbouring buildings differ?

Bore depth, tanker sourcing and season all move the reading, so the table is a starting point, not a verdict. Measuring your own tap is the only way to know, and if your block runs its own bore, read whether borewell water is safe for bathing.

What is Kolkata's water TDS level and hardness?

Treated supply typically lands a few hundred milligrams per litre. Public Health Engineering testing across New Town in January 2026 recorded total hardness of roughly 166 to 190 mg/L and TDS of about 181 to 210 mg/L, with residual chlorine at every sampling point.

Indian standards set a desirable TDS of 500 mg/L and acceptable total hardness of 200 mg/L, with 600 mg/L permissible where no alternative exists. Those are the BIS drinking-water reference points Indian labs report against. Treated Kolkata supply clears them; delta groundwater frequently does not. Note that TDS and hardness measure different things, and only one predicts scum in your basin.

How do I test my own supply?

A soap shake test gives the direction in a minute: plenty of lather means soft, a thin curdy scum means hard. A TDS meter or strip gives a number, a BIS-accredited lab the exact figure. The five home testing methods, and what each costs walks through all of them.

Is Kolkata water bad for hair?

Hard water does not cause hair loss, but it leaves calcium and magnesium on the shaft, and that residue makes hair dull, rough and easier to snap, so ordinary shedding looks far heavier than it is. If your building runs on a tubewell, groundwater is the likelier culprit, and the visible signs of hard water damage usually show up before the shedding does.

Laboratory work backs this up. A 2018 study in the International Journal of Trichology found hard-water-treated hair had significantly lower tensile strength than hair washed in deionised water, and electron microscopy in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology measured calcium and magnesium deposits on hard-water-washed shafts.

Water is rarely the only cause. Stress, diet, sleep, thyroid issues and genetics all matter, so hard water aggravates shedding without being the root cause.

Is Kolkata water good for skin?

On treated piped supply, for most people, unremarkable. On harder borewell water, not: the same minerals raise skin surface pH and strip natural oils, leaving a residue that keeps moisturiser sitting on top.

The pattern residents describe is consistent: tightness after a bath, flaking through the dry weeks when hard water makes winter dryness worse, a dullness no serum fixes. Hard water does not cause eczema, but it makes dryness harder to settle.

Does a shower filter help with iron or arsenic in Kolkata groundwater?

No, and this matters more in Bengal than almost anywhere else in India. Iron and arsenic are the region's serious groundwater problems, and both need treating upstream, at the bore or by switching to treated supply. A shower filter is the wrong tool for either, which is the clearest case of a purifier and a shower filter doing different jobs.

A Chemosphere review of 4,210 groundwater samples from all 141 KMC wards over 23 years concluded that KMC groundwater is not a sustainable freshwater source because of arsenic, high iron, hardness and dissolved solids, with southern wards worst affected.

State-wide monitoring agrees, and the Central Ground Water Board's 2025 report found 19.5 per cent of pre-monsoon West Bengal samples above the 10 ppb arsenic limit. Nationally, 35.2 per cent of sampled locations showed iron above safety thresholds. If you are on a bore, get a lab test and compare it against typical borewell readings from Indian apartment blocks.

What actually helps with Kolkata's hard water?

Cut the hardness and chlorine that reach your hair and skin at the wash itself, then keep the routine after it gentle. Most fixes traded on local forums last one wash and change nothing about tomorrow's tap.

  • Stored RO water helps, and plenty of Kolkata homes do it, but hauling buckets for every wash is not sustainable.
  • Vinegar or lemon rinses lift mineral film for one wash, and do nothing for skin.
  • A shower or tap filter treats the water at the point of use, every time, with no plumbing work and no landlord permission.

What does a filter actually change?

A Care Dale filter reduces the hardness, chlorine and physical contaminants that drive dryness and breakage, so shampoo lathers and skincare absorbs. It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals. Across the category: no shower filter, Care Dale included, addresses iron, heavy metals, chloramine, TDS or bacteria.

How long before hair and skin change?

Give it about four weeks. Most people notice softer hair and less post-bath tightness inside two to four weeks, with shedding and scalp comfort settling over a couple of months.

An independent clinical study of 50 participants washing in water above 500 ppm TDS recorded a 78 per cent reduction in hair fall over four weeks, an 11 per cent increase in scalp hydration, and 87 per cent saying they would recommend it. Water is one factor among several, so keep sleep, diet and medical causes in view.

Curated Picks

Pick by what feeds your tap, not by price, and re-test every few months.

Both use the same CareTec 3-layer system: pre-filtration for sediment, CareTec ultra filtration for hardness, and a final layer for chlorine and impurities. It blocks 92% of calcium and removes 96% of chlorine, with no salt or waste water. Both fit a standard tap or shower in about two minutes and are dermatologist-certified, clinically tested.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kolkata water hard or soft? It depends on your source. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation's piped supply is treated Hooghly surface water and usually tests moderate. Groundwater from tubewells and private borewells runs harder, so two nearby buildings can read very differently.

Does Kolkata have hard water? Yes, in the parts of the city running on groundwater. Indian standards put acceptable total hardness at 200 mg/L, and groundwater across the Bengal delta frequently sits above that. Treated municipal supply usually tests below it.

Is Kolkata water bad for hair? If it is borewell or tubewell water, it can be. Calcium and magnesium settle on the shaft, roughen the cuticle and make strands snap more easily. Treated piped supply is far less of a problem.

Is Kolkata water good for skin? Treated piped supply is generally fine. Harder groundwater is not: it raises skin surface pH, removes natural oils, and leaves a residue that stops moisturiser absorbing. People commonly notice tightness after bathing and flaking through dry winter weeks.

Is Kolkata tap water safe to drink? The Kolkata Municipal Corporation treats and chlorinates its piped supply, though many residents still boil before drinking. A shower or tap filter is different: it reduces hardness, chlorine and micro-particles. It does not lower TDS or remove iron, heavy metals or bacteria, because it is filtration, not a purifier.
