There are three primary forms of hair damage and each depends on the source of damage in question. Hard water affects the outside of hair and leaves a layer of minerals on top. Heat-induced damage and chemical damage result from changes in the keratin chains in the hair.
The distinction is significant since it determines what you're able to reverse. Mineral accumulation on the surface can be washed away, purified, and eliminated, whereas damage to the inner structure is irreversible and can only be treated.

What does hard water damage to hair look like?
Effects of hard water are solely superficial. The minerals in it such as calcium and magnesium form deposits on the surface of the hair cuticle, making it feel rough, appear lifeless, prone to tangles and ineffective at getting rid of the buildup. Even applying conditioner does not remedy the situation, leaving hair feeling dry and straw-like.
An important detail is that it has a fairly even effect on the complete head, including the roots, as all hairs are exposed to that particular quantity of water. Heat and chemical damage usually do not impact the strands uniformly, being mostly focused on the lengths or ends of hair.

What does chemical or bleach damage look like?

Can you have more than one type at once?
Indeed, this situation is common as well and this is what complicates self-diagnosis. For instance, a person who dyes their hair, uses a flat iron, and washes their hair with hard water will have all three types of stress on the same hair at the same time.
When they stack, they also feed each other. Hard water lifts the cuticle, which lets heat and chemicals reach the inside more easily, so mineral-coated hair scorches and processes less evenly than soft-water hair would.

What helps once you know which it is?
