Quick Answer: Soft water is better for hair than hard water. It carries under 60 mg/L of calcium and magnesium, so shampoo lathers fully and rinses clean. Most Indian cities supply both kinds of water, sometimes to the same building on different days, which is why hair that behaved in Mumbai misbehaves in Gurgaon. This article compares hard and soft water on the seven things you notice at the basin, gives the numbers that define each, shows how to tell which you have, and explains what actually softens water, including the one method that does not. The dermatologist-certified, clinically tested filter appears where it fits.
What is the difference between hard and soft water?
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up from rock; soft water carries little. The United States Geological Survey classes water below 60 mg/L of calcium carbonate as soft, 61 to 120 as moderately hard, 121 to 180 as hard and above 180 as very hard, and the Indian standard IS 10500:2012 sets 200 mg/L as the acceptable limit for hardness and 600 mg/L as permissible.
Groundwater is usually hard because it has moved through rock; surface water from rivers and lakes is usually soft to moderate. That maps neatly onto Indian cities: borewell and tanker supply in Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi and Gurgaon runs 400 to 1,100 ppm, while Cauvery, Khadakwasla and Mumbai's lake supply run 100 to 300 ppm.
How do hard and soft water compare for hair?
Hard water loses on six of the seven things people notice and wins on one, volume. The table below is what each does at the basin.

The research supports the middle of that table more than the extremes. A 2013 study in the International Journal of Trichology found no significant difference in tensile strength or elasticity after 30 days of hard water treatment, while a 2018 study in the same journal found a measurable drop in strength and more breakage.
The consistent finding across both is that hard water changes the surface of the hair and how it feels, and breakage follows from that rather than from any effect at the root. That is also why hair fall from hard water shows up as short broken pieces in the brush rather than full strands with a white bulb at the end.
Is soft water always better for hair?
Soft water is better for most hair, but it is not perfect, and people who move from hard water to soft water often complain for the first month. With nothing left on the hair, fine or straight hair falls flat and feels limp, and the slippery feeling after rinsing gets mistaken for shampoo not washing out.
Softened water, the kind produced by a salt-based softener, adds a second effect: the calcium is swapped for sodium, which makes the water feel silky and the hair feel greasy sooner. None of this is damage. It is the absence of the film that hard water users have learned to read as "clean". The fix is a lighter conditioner applied only to the lengths, and a volumising shampoo for fine hair.
Naturally soft water, from a lake or a river, carries no added sodium and does not bring the greasy feeling, which is why hair washed on Mumbai supply rarely has this complaint and hair washed through a new softener in Bangalore often does.
How do you tell which water you have?
Three checks at home settle it in a minute. Shake a capful of liquid soap in a bottle of tap water: a thick foam means soft, a thin layer with cloudy water means hard. Look at the tap and the shower screen: white crust and spots mean hard. And read a TDS meter, ₹200 to ₹500 online: in Indian tap water, a reading above 300 ppm is a working sign of hard water, because TDS and hardness rise together.
For a proper hardness figure, a lab test or a hardness strip reports calcium carbonate in mg/L directly, which is the number the USGS and BIS bands use. The how-to-check article walks through all four methods.
Test at the outlet you wash at, not the kitchen tap, because many apartments run the kitchen on corporation water and the bathrooms on the borewell. Test twice a year as well: summer tanker top-ups push the reading up in most cities.
What actually softens water for washing hair?
Two things change what reaches the hair: a plumbed softener, which swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium through a resin bed, and a point-of-use filter at the shower or tap, which reduces the hardness minerals, chlorine and sediment in the water you wash with. Everything else treats the hair after the water has done its work.
Boiling does not soften hard water for washing. Heat drops out only the temporary hardness, the carbonate part, as scale in the pot, and leaves the permanent hardness from sulphates and chlorides untouched; a litre boiled for a rinse is also not a wash.
A diluted vinegar rinse smooths the cuticle but binds no minerals. A chelating shampoo with EDTA, sodium phytate or sodium gluconate does lift the film, once a week, and is the right partner to cleaner water rather than a substitute for it.
A tap and shower filter for municipal water or its borewell version is the point-of-use option. What do four weeks usually look like?
In the first week after the water changes, shampoo lathers with half the usual amount and the hair feels lighter, sometimes limp. By the second week, the roughness after washing eases and colour-treated hair stops dulling between washes. By the fourth week, breakage in the brush drops and the scalp stops itching after a wash.
Growth rate does not change, because the follicle was never involved; what changes is how much of the hair you grow survives to length. People who move the other way, from soft water to hard, see the same sequence in reverse, which is the quickest proof that the water and not the shampoo was the variable.
Frequently asked questions
Does hard water cause hair loss? It causes breakage along the shaft, which shows up as more hair in the drain, but it does not act on the follicle, so it does not cause the thinning that hormones, nutrition or genetics cause. Breakage eases within weeks once the mineral film stops forming; follicle-driven loss does not.
Why does my hair feel greasy in soft water? Because nothing is left on the hair to add grip, and with softened water the sodium makes it feel silkier still. Use less shampoo, apply conditioner only from mid-length down, and choose a volumising formula for fine hair. The feeling fades within a few weeks as you adjust product amounts.
Does boiling water make it soft? Only partly. Boiling removes temporary hardness by dropping calcium carbonate out as scale, but permanent hardness from sulphates and chlorides stays in the water. Boiled water is also impractical for washing hair at volume. A filter at the outlet or a plumbed softener changes the water at full flow.
Is 300 TDS water hard? Usually, yes, for Indian tap water. TDS measures everything dissolved, not only hardness, but in most Indian supplies the two track closely, and 300 ppm sits above the 200 mg/L acceptable limit for hardness in the Indian standard. A hardness strip or lab test gives the exact figure.
Does a shower filter reduce TDS? No. A shower or tap filter reduces hardness minerals, chlorine, odours and micro-particles, which is what damages hair and skin at every wash. It does not lower TDS or remove iron, heavy metals or bacteria, because it is filtration, not a purifier.
