Less often, cooler, and with the softest water you can get to them. Extensions have no oil supply and no ability to repair themselves, so every mineral deposit that lands on them stays there.

Your own hair is coated in sebum from the scalp and grows out damage over time. An extension gets neither. Whatever hard water leaves behind accumulates for the entire life of the set.

That is why a set can look worse than the hair it is clipped or bonded to within a couple of months. Below: why extensions take hardness harder, a washing routine that works in Indian water, what buildup looks like, and what a filter does and does not change.

Why does hard water hit extensions harder than your own hair?

Because nothing on an extension is alive. Growing hair is also technically dead along the shaft, but it is continuously coated in sebum from the scalp and, critically, it gets replaced.

An extension has neither. It sits at the same point in its life for months, collecting whatever the water leaves, with no new growth arriving to dilute the damage.

The mineral effect on hair fibre has been measured. A trichology study found hair treated at 486.7 mg/L for three months lost measurable tensile strength against both a control group and deionised water.

Indian supply frequently runs at those levels or well past them. BIS IS 10500:2012 puts acceptable total hardness at 200 mg/L with a permissible ceiling of 600 mg/L, and a 2025 study in southern Tamil Nadu recorded hardness reaching 5,260 mg/L after the monsoon.

The classification helps you place your own supply. The Maryland Geological Survey puts water above 180 mg/L in the very hard band, and most Indian metros on groundwater sit well past that line.

Processing compounds it. Most extensions are bleached and re-dyed to reach a uniform shade, and already-porous fibre picks up deposits far faster than virgin hair does.

Heat adds a second mechanism. Calcium carbonate becomes less soluble as water warms, and building services guidance notes that precipitation starts at roughly 35C to 40C, so a hot wash deposits more mineral than a warm one.

What does hard water damage look like on extensions?

Dullness first, then tangling, then a texture change that conditioner stops fixing. The sequence is fairly consistent and worth recognising early.

The last row is the important one. On your own hair, that stage grows out. On an extension it is permanent, and the set is effectively finished.

How often should extensions actually be washed?

Far less often than your own hair. Once or twice a week is the usual guidance for wefts and bonds, and every wash is an exposure event rather than a maintenance one.

A routine that holds up in hard water:

  1. Brush before wetting, from the ends upward, holding the root or bond to take tension off the attachment.
  2. Wash the scalp, not the lengths. Let the lather run down. Scrubbing the mid-lengths creates friction against fibre that cannot recover.
  3. Keep water warm rather than hot. Heat opens the cuticle, and ten minutes at about 41C raised skin pH in controlled testing.
  4. Rinse for longer than feels needed. Residue is the thing you are trying to avoid leaving behind.
  5. Finish with a cool rinse to help the cuticle lie flatter.
  6. Never sleep on them wet. Damp fibre plus friction is where most tangling starts.

Bonded and taped sets have their own rules from your stylist about product near the attachment point. Those override anything general.

Can you undo buildup once it has happened?

Partly, and less than the marketing suggests. A chelating or clarifying wash lifts some mineral deposit off the fibre, which is why extensions often look briefly better after one.

The limit is that removing deposits does not restore cuticle that has already been abraded. You are cleaning the surface, not repairing the structure, and repeated clarifying is itself drying on fibre that has no oil supply.

Prevention is genuinely more effective here than it is on growing hair, purely because there is no regrowth to fall back on. The same logic applies to other hair investments, which is why keratin treatments fade faster in hard water and salon colour dulls sooner.

What helps if your water is hard?

Reduce the hardness before it reaches the fibre. That is the only intervention that acts on every wash for the life of the set, rather than trying to strip deposits off afterwards.

What four weeks usually look like

Week one is mostly about how the set behaves wet. Less tangling while rinsing and easier brushing afterwards are the first things people notice.

Weeks two and three bring the shine question. Fibre that was dulling should stop dulling further, though existing film needs a clarifying wash to lift.

By week four, the honest measure is not how the set looks but how fast it is degrading. Extensions do not recover, so success here is a slower decline and a set that lasts closer to its expected life.

Your own hair underneath moves on a different clock, since it regrows about a centimetre a month and heat and chemical damage stack on top of water quality.
