Hard water hair damage is the cumulative weakening of the hair shaft and scalp caused by dissolved calcium, magnesium, and chlorine in tap water. Why does hard water damage hair?
Calcium and magnesium ions react with shampoo surfactants and form insoluble residue, basically soap scum, which coats every strand. That film blocks moisture, traps chlorine, and nudges scalp pH upward. Bangalore borewell water regularly clears 500 ppm TDS. For context, BIS sets 200 mg/L CaCO3 as the acceptable hardness limit. What is the normal range?
The American Academy of Dermatology puts 50 to 100 hairs a day in the normal range; over 150 is excessive. Past that threshold for two weeks straight, clinicians have a name for it: telogen effluvium.
How hard water triggers it
Calcium-surfactant scum clogs follicle openings and dries out the scalp. The shaft weakens. It snaps during combing. Irritated follicles drop into telogen early. The oxidative-stress mechanism
Melanin is vulnerable to oxidation. Chlorine attacks the granule directly. Copper and iron act as catalysts, speeding things up. Pigment loss plus cortex damage, basically. Over months, you get dullness. Over years, greys in your 20s.

Can hard water damage be reversed?

Is hard water hair fall permanent?
