Overhead Tank Filter vs Shower Filter: Which One Protects Hair?

An overhead tank filter and a shower filter solve different problems. A tank filter traps particles, meaning sand, silt and rust flakes, across everything the tank feeds. It does not reduce hardness.
That is not a product flaw. It is physics. Hardness is dissolved, and dissolved minerals pass straight through a mesh or sediment cartridge.
This guide covers what each option removes, what whole-house hardness reduction actually costs, where a point-of-use filter fits, and the mistakes that waste the most money. What does an overhead tank filter actually remove?
An overhead tank filter removes suspended solids. Sand, silt, rust flakes and grit get caught at the inlet or outlet, which protects taps, pipes and appliances from visible sediment.
What it cannot do is capture anything dissolved. The World Health Organization's background document on hardness describes hardness as being caused by "dissolved polyvalent metallic ions, predominantly calcium and magnesium cations."
Dissolved ions are not particles. They are individual charged atoms in solution, far smaller than any sediment screen is built to stop.
So a tank filter can leave your water visibly clearer while the hardness reading stays exactly where it was.
Does an overhead tank filter reduce hardness?
No. Reducing hardness requires either ion exchange or a membrane process, not particle filtration. A sediment cartridge has no mechanism for holding a dissolved calcium ion.
This matters because "overhead tank hard water filter" is a heavily marketed search term in India, and much of what ranks for it is a sediment unit sold against a hardness problem it cannot touch.
The test is simple. If limescale still forms on your taps and soap still refuses to lather after installation, the hardness was never removed. WHO notes that hard water requires "considerably more soap to produce a lather," which is the oldest and most reliable field test there is.
For a number rather than a feel, IS 10500:2012 sets the acceptable limit for total hardness at 200 mg/L and the permissible limit at 600 mg/L, the latter applying only where no alternative source exists. Anything above 200 mg/L is worth acting on.

What does whole-house hardness reduction cost?
A plumbed ion-exchange softener is the genuine whole-house answer, and it is a significant investment. It sits on the main line, uses resin to swap hardness ions for sodium, and needs regular salt.

The softener is the right call if limescale is damaging appliances across the property. It is a lot of money and plumbing if your actual complaint is hair and skin.

Why does the shower matter more than the tank for hair and skin?
Because exposure happens at the outlet, not in storage. Your hair and scalp meet water for a few minutes a day, at one fixture, and that is the entire contact window that affects them.
Treating 1,000 litres in a tank to protect the ten litres that touch your hair is expensive in the wrong place. A point-of-use filter treats the water at the moment of contact instead.
The evidence on what hard water does to hair is genuinely mixed, and worth stating plainly. A scanning electron microscopy study in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology tested hair in hard water at 287 to 533 ppm against softer water at 50 to 250 ppm.
It found significantly higher magnesium deposition, at P = 0.001, but no significant difference in surface damage under the microscope. Mineral film is real. Structural damage is contested.
Which option suits your situation?
Match the fix to the complaint, not to the biggest product. Three common situations cover most Indian homes.
- Visible grit, muddy water, sediment in the tank. A tank inlet filter is the correct answer, and a shower filter will clog quickly without one.
- Limescale on taps, geysers and washing machines across the house. That is a whole-house hardness problem, and a plumbed softener is the honest recommendation.
- Hair feels coated, skin feels tight, shampoo will not lather. That is contact exposure at one outlet, and point-of-use is the proportionate fix.
Plenty of homes need two of these. A tank filter and a shower filter are complementary, not alternatives.
Apartment residents have an extra variable, because a shared sump blends whatever the building can source that week. A 2018 survey reported by Citizen Matters found 24 percent of Bengaluru households drawing water above the 200 mg/L limit, from both borewells and municipal supply.
Where a utility publishes sampling data, such as the BWSSB water quality monitoring system, that gives you the treated supply baseline. Common mistakes that waste money
These four account for most of the wasted spend we see.
- Buying a sediment filter to fix hardness. The most common and most expensive error. Confirm hardness with a test before buying anything.
- Fitting a shower filter to untreated muddy water. Grit shortens cartridge life sharply. Deal with sediment upstream first.
- Assuming a softener fixes drinking water. Ion-exchange softening targets hardness, not contamination.
- Testing once. Tanker top-ups and seasonal borewell swings move the number, so retest every few months.
What four weeks usually look like
Change with a point-of-use filter is gradual, not immediate. Most people notice within the first few washes that shampoo lathers more easily and rinses cleanly.
Through weeks two and three, the coated feeling on mid-lengths tends to ease and combing gets simpler. Scalp dryness and itch often settle in the same window, though this varies a lot between people.
By week four, people typically report hair that feels softer and holds moisture better. What no filter does is stop hair loss driven by genetics, hormones, medication or nutritional deficiency. If shedding continues, see a dermatologist rather than changing hardware.

Does any of this lower TDS? No. A shower or tap filter reduces hardness minerals, chlorine, odours and micro-particles, which is what affects hair and skin at every wash. It does not lower TDS or remove iron, heavy metals or bacteria, because it is filtration and not purification.
Is hard water officially unsafe to bathe in? No health-based guideline value for hardness has been set by the World Health Organization. Hardness is treated as an aesthetic and practical issue, affecting scale, soap use and how hair and skin feel, rather than a safety threshold.
