Mumbai Hard Water: What It Does to Hair and Skin

Last updated: August 2026.

Mumbai is unusual among big Indian cities: its municipal tap water is mostly soft. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) pipes water from seven surface lakes, and lake water is naturally soft to moderately soft, which turns most of the usual hard-water advice on its head.

So if your hair is shedding and your skin feels tight, water is still worth suspecting, just for different reasons. The usual culprits here are your building's borewell, the tankers that top up your tank through summer, and chlorine.

This guide separates those three using the BMC supply map, government testing and the Indian standards, and explains where a dermatologist-certified, clinically tested filter actually helps.

Does Mumbai have hard water?

In most cases, no. The BMC's supply is monsoon-fed surface water from seven lakes, which picks up far fewer dissolved minerals than groundwater from an aquifer. The homes that do see hard water are almost always topping up from a borewell or a tanker.

The strongest public evidence comes from government testing. When the Bureau of Indian Standards sampled tap water across major Indian cities, Mumbai was the only city where all ten samples fully complied with IS 10500:2012, the national drinking-water standard.

How soft is soft?

The WHO classifies water below 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate as soft, and 60 to 120 mg/L as moderately hard. Sampling of Vihar, one of the two lakes inside the city, recorded electrical conductivity of 96.5 to 132 microsiemens per centimetre, consistent with lightly mineralised water.

Where does Mumbai get its water from?

From seven lakes, none of them under your building. Vihar and Tulsi sit inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park; Tansa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna and Bhatsa lie outside the city in Thane, Palghar and Nashik districts. Together they deliver roughly 4,000 million litres a day.

That raw water is treated at two complexes, Bhandup and Panjrapur, before entering the city's reservoirs and mains. Because it starts as rainfall held behind dams rather than water that has sat in rock, it never picks up the mineral load a borewell does. Hardness is geology, not postcode.

Which Mumbai areas actually have hard water?

Mumbai's hard water sits wherever groundwater does the work. Some 17,364 wells in the city are used for the commercial sale of water, against a shortfall of about 565 million litres a day that private tankers fill, mostly from borewells.

Area / zone Usual source Hardness tendency
Island city and suburbs on full BMC supply Lake water via Bhandup or Panjrapur Soft to moderately soft; chlorine, not hardness, is the issue
Societies topping up from a building borewell Shallow coastal groundwater Harder and variable; some coastal wells run saline
Homes leaning on tankers through summer Mostly borewell groundwater Hard and unpredictable; changes with the source well

How hard does the groundwater get?

Harder than the lakes, sometimes far harder. A Central Ground Water Board study of 162 coastal Maharashtra samples, Greater Mumbai included, found 17.3% exceeded the desirable total hardness limit. State monitoring nearby is starker: one Raigad borewell recorded total hardness of 1,920 mg/L, rated unsuitable for drinking. If your building runs on groundwater, the borewell TDS ranges typical of Indian apartments give a sense of the swing.

Is Mumbai water bad for hair?

Usually not because of hardness, which is why so much standard hard-water advice misses here. On full BMC supply, the water hitting your head each morning is soft but chlorinated. On borewell or tanker water, you get both chlorine and real hardness.

Indian standards require a minimum of 0.2 mg/L free residual chlorine at the consumer's tap wherever water is chlorinated. That is a public-health necessity, not a fault, but it still means daily exposure that dries the scalp and roughens the cuticle, as covered in what the research on shower chlorine actually shows.

And if you are on borewell or tanker water?

Then hardness comes back into play. Calcium and magnesium leave a residue that stops shampoo foaming and keeps conditioner from absorbing, and hard water is linked to more shedding without being the only cause, which is exactly the pattern in the signs of hard-water damage on hair. Still, a study using scanning electron microscopy found higher mineral deposits but no clear structural damage, so diet, stress, sleep and genetics all matter too, and the same minerals also raise hair porosity so colour and moisture escape faster.

How do you find out which water reaches your tap?

Ask your society first, then measure. Most Mumbai societies run at least one borewell, and many blend it into the overhead tank without telling residents, which is why two flats on the same lane report opposite experiences. Ten minutes with the secretary settles more than any city-wide article.

  1. Ask what fills the tank. BMC line only, borewell only, or a blend, and how often tankers come in summer.
  2. Do the soap shake test. Plenty of bubbles and clear water means soft; a milky, scummy layer means hard.
  3. Use a TDS meter or hardness strip. Cheap, quick, and good for catching the swing when tankers arrive.

Indian standards set acceptable total hardness at 200 mg/L, relaxed to 600 mg/L only where no better source exists. If you would rather confirm it properly, our step-by-step home hardness test walks through the method and the small cost.

What actually helps with Mumbai's water?

Match the fix to what you are actually up against. On full BMC supply that means cutting chlorine and the sediment that arrives with monsoon turbidity; on borewell or tanker supply it means reducing hardness as well. Bucket workarounds address neither reliably.

  • Stored RO water for washing is gentler, but hauling buckets for every wash rarely survives a work week.
  • Vinegar or yogurt rinses briefly decalcify hair and do nothing for the next wash or for skin.
  • A shower or tap filter treats water at the point of use, every wash, with no plumbing and no landlord permission. The fuller softener versus shower filter comparison covers the trade-offs.

What can a filter actually fix?

A Care Dale filter reduces hardness, chlorine and physical contaminants such as sediment and rust, so shampoo lathers, conditioner absorbs and skincare works. It is filtration, not a purification system, so it does not reduce total dissolved solids (TDS), nor does it separate out iron or heavy metals. To be clear about the category: no shower filter, Care Dale included, addresses iron, heavy metals, chloramine, TDS or bacteria.

Expect gradual change rather than an overnight fix. Most people notice smoother hair and less post-shower tightness within about two to four weeks, while shedding and scalp comfort take a little longer to settle. This is the pattern people in other tanker-fed belts describe too, such as Chennai's OMR and Velachery tanker zones.

Care Dale's own independent clinical study, run over four weeks in Bengaluru, reported a 78% reduction in hair fall among 50 participants on water above 500 ppm TDS, which is its result, not a universal one. Re-test after the monsoon, because hardness across Indian cities shifts with the season.

Curated Picks

Pick by what fills your tank, not your postcode, and re-test every few months as the tanker and borewell mix shifts through the year.

Both use the same CareTec 3-layer filtration that reduces hardness, chlorine, odours and micro-particles, fit a standard tap or shower in minutes, and are clinically tested and dermatologist-certified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mumbai water hard or soft? Generally soft, with real exceptions. The piped municipal supply comes from rainfall-fed surface lakes and carries low dissolved mineral content. Buildings blending in borewell water, or leaning on summer tankers, draw groundwater instead, which is harder and varies well by well.

Is Mumbai BMC water hard or soft? Soft to moderately soft. BMC water is collected behind dams rather than pumped from rock, so it never picks up the mineral load groundwater does. Government sampling found every Mumbai piped sample met Indian drinking-water standards, hardness included.

Is Mumbai water good for hair? Comparatively, yes. On full municipal supply, hair fares better here than in most hard-water Indian cities. Residual chlorine, required by standards for safety, is the main daily irritant, drying the scalp and roughening the cuticle over time.

Does Mumbai water cause hair fall? It can contribute, rarely as the sole cause. Chlorine exposure and, in borewell or tanker homes, genuine hardness both weaken the hair shaft and irritate the scalp, so normal shedding looks worse. Stress, diet, sleep and genetics matter more for most people.

Where does water come from in Mumbai? Seven lakes. Vihar and Tulsi sit inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park, while Tansa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna and Bhatsa lie in Thane, Palghar and Nashik districts. That water is treated at the Bhandup and Panjrapur complexes before reaching city mains.

Is Mumbai water safe to drink? Mumbai's piped supply topped the government's national testing round. A shower or tap filter reduces hardness minerals, chlorine, odours and micro-particles, what damages hair and skin at every wash. It does not lower TDS or remove iron, heavy metals or bacteria, because it is filtration, not a purifier.
