_Last updated: 25 June 2026._
Whether you have relocated around Lucknow, or have recently become aware of losing more hair with each combing or feeling an increasing tightness of your skin following your daily bathing ritual; you are not having an imaginary moment and the residents of Lucknow share a huge amount of bitterness online about these issues! The reason for all this is actually determined by the source of the water supply feeding your flat. Below you will discover how to determine if you have "hard" water available to your apartment, the negative effect that the type of water has on your hair and skin and what really helps!
Is Lucknow water hard or soft?
Locality and source are determining factors. In Lucknow there is a reliance on the ground water and the ground water at Lucknow is both soft and hard depending, again, on the specific area within the city.
How mineralised is Lucknow's groundwater?
The major portion of the city of Lucknow is located on the Central Ganga alluvial plain, adjacent to the River Gomti. Most of the ground water sources within the city show only moderate levels of mineralisation. A published study of Lucknow city groundwater recorded total hardness from roughly 97 mg/L to 292 mg/L, with total dissolved solids ranging from approximately 264 mg/L to over 1,000 mg/L.
Why does the water differ from one area to another?
Your apartment will have different types of water compared to your friend's apartment 10 minutes outside of the city. Central areas, such as the Gomti River area, typically have better quality water than outer areas and those supplied by tube wells, which can be harder. Most of Lucknow is reliant on ground water and those who live in piped water connections usually revert to bore wells for their water supply so that is where most of the hair and skin problems originate from.
Which Lucknow areas have the hardest water?
Lucknow's hardest reading are from the outer regions and tube well dependent with central Gomti supplied water areas usually giving the softest readings. The hardness also changes with depth and the season.
| Area / zone | Usual source | Hardness and TDS tendency |
|---|---|---|
| Shaheed Path and outer-ring pockets | Deep borewell groundwater | Harder; TDS recorded above 1,000 ppm, hardness around 255 mg/L |
| Nishat Ganj and older central pockets | Borewell and hand pump | Hard in places; hardness up to ~290 mg/L |
| Gomti Nagar, Hazratganj, Qaisar Bagh (core) | Gomti surface plus groundwater | Moderate, often under the 200 mg/L hardness limit |
Why can two nearby buildings test differently?
While there are trends, they are not absolute. Two buildings of the same colony may yield different results depending on what boring the water source is drilled from. On top of that, during periods of insufficient rainfall, some adjacent properties will have their tanks replenished by their neighbours' trucks. Readings also climb as a bore goes deeper or as the water table drops late in the dry season, so the only way to know your own water is to measure it.
Does Lucknow water cause hair fall?
Hard Water in Lucknow can make your hair fall out, however, it is not usually the only reason this is happening to you. The reason that hard water does not pull your hair out by the root is because it damages and roughens your hair strands and irritates the scalp, therefore causing normal daily hair loss to appear much worse than it actually is.
How do the minerals actually damage hair?
Minerals such as calcium and magnesium will accumulate on your hair and scalp if you use hard water. This accumulation will leave your hair feeling dry, brittle and limp and your hair will break when you comb or brush it. In addition to this the build up of residue will also inhibit shampoo and conditioners from fully creating lather and absorption. This will create a snowball effect (the accumulation created by each wash) of poor performance for shampoos and conditioners.
What else affects hair fall besides the water?
Even though hard water strips the scalp and aggravates shedding without being the only reason, stress, nutritional intake, sleeping habits, and genetic factors also contribute to hair loss. If you experienced an increase in shedding following your recent change of residence; this may have been caused by your new water source, particularly if the water source is either a borewell or tanker.
How to check if your water is hard
You can find out if you have a hardness issue without having a laboratory test. Using only the tools available in your home, take a quick test to determine if you may have a hardness problem before spending money to fix it.
- The soap shake test: You may want to fill up a bottle of your tap water, add a little bit of liquid soap, and shake it up. If you have lots of bubbles from the clear water, it is considered soft water; if you have little to no bubbles and a milky or cloudy top layer, the water would be hard.
- A TDS meter: an affordable portable instrument that will quickly determine approximately how many minerals are present in the water sample. This device can also be used to monitor the transfer of water from one tanker to another.
- A hardness test strip or a BIS-accredited lab test for an exact figure in mg/L.
What TDS and hardness count as too high?
Indian regulations are based on the standards established by BIS limits for drinking water. An ideal total dissolved solids (TDS) level should not exceed 500 ppm (parts per million), while maximum acceptable hardness is 200 mg/L (milligrams per litre). Therefore, values higher than both of these thresholds indicate that you should take action. full home-testing method, with costs gives additional details about each possible solution.
What does hard water do to your skin?
Hard water dries and irritates skin. It strips the skin's natural oils and raises its surface pH, which is why so many people notice tightness, flaking and dullness. As these mineral build-up happens on the head (hair), they will also result in build-up on the skin.
Why do my moisturisers stop working?
The residue forces the skin away from its natural acid and creates a barrier which is then lost by use of these products resulting in less absorption of moisturisers so that the creams appear to be sitting on the surface of the skin. In Lucknow during the winter months there are complaints of dry spots, itchy skin, and breakouts.
Does a skincare routine fix it on its own?
A softening barrier friendly skincare routine for hard water cities works functionally; however, it is much better when the water itself is softened first!
What actually helps with Lucknow's hard water?
The best way to solve the problem is to make sure that less hard water and chlorine hit your hair and skin with each wash, followed by a more gentle washing routine. Many of the leading forums generally give you temporary solutions to the issue rather than a complete solution.
- To use stored RO water to wash hair is beneficial, and so most people in Lucknow do this, but it is not practical to carry buckets of water to use for each wash daily.
- Vinegar or yogurt rinses can remove the mineral build-up on hair for a short time, but they will not remove the mineral build-up from skin or for the next wash.
- However, a shower or tap filter will treat the water at the point of use every single time, making it the most practical long-term solution for the renter and owner alike because it does not require any plumbing work and takes just minutes to fit into a standard Lucknow residence.
How does a filter fix it at the source?
A Care Dale filter will reduce the hard water, chlorine, and any other particles that cause the dryness and breakages in your hair, so that your shampoo will lather properly, your conditioner can absorb effectively into the hair, and finally, your skincare products will work as they are intended to. It is filtration, not a purifier, so it does not lower TDS or remove iron and heavy metals. In addition to using a Care Dale filter, it is important to also maintain a healthy nutritional diet and use gentle hair care products. If you have a borewell/tanker home, you may want to check whether the borewell water is safe for bathing and washing your hair. No matter which method of water supply is used, make sure to retest your water supply every few months; the quality of the groundwater in Lucknow varies according to the borewell depth/season.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Lucknow water hard or soft? It depends on your locality and source. Much of the city sits on Gomti-fed alluvial groundwater that tests moderate, often under the 200 mg/L hardness limit. But studies record harder pockets, with hardness near 290 mg/L in spots and TDS above 1,000 in outer zones. Because supply differs building to building, a quick home test is the only reliable way to know your own water.
Which areas of Lucknow have softer water? Central, Gomti-fed zones such as Gomti Nagar, Hazratganj and Qaisar Bagh often test moderate, frequently within acceptable hardness limits. Outer and tube-well-dependent pockets, including parts of Nishat Ganj and the Shaheed Path belt, tend to run harder. Even within a softer area, deep bores and tanker top-ups during shortages can raise hardness temporarily, so the area name is no guarantee.
Does borewell water cause my hair fall in Lucknow? Often it contributes. Borewell and tube-well water in Lucknow is groundwater, which carries more calcium and magnesium than surface supply, and that hardness coats and weakens hair. Residents who shift to bore or tanker water during shortages frequently notice their hair worsen. Reducing the hardness at the shower is the practical way to protect hair regardless of the day's source.
Does washing hair with RO water help in Lucknow? Yes, but it is impractical. Soft, low-mineral RO water is genuinely gentler and reduces breakage, which is why many Lucknow homes try it. The catch is doing it every single wash with stored buckets. Filtering the bathing water at the tap or shower gives the same softness without the daily effort of carrying RO water.
What is the TDS of Lucknow water? It varies widely by area. One city study recorded TDS from about 264 mg/L in central Qaisar Bagh up to over 1,000 mg/L near Shaheed Path, against a desirable drinking limit of 500. TDS itself is not the same as hardness, but high groundwater TDS often comes with higher calcium and magnesium. A handheld meter gives a quick local reading.
How quickly will my hair and skin improve after fixing the water? Most people notice softer hair and less skin tightness within two to four weeks of reducing hard-water exposure, with shedding and scalp comfort improving over a couple of months. Hard water is only one factor, so the best results come when you also address sleep, stress, diet and any medical causes alongside the water change.
